Sweet Rickey. In the last few months I have broken 1981 in vending, cello, and wax. All were horribly centered and filled with tilts. None yielded anything substantial in the way of gradeable cards.
1981 is a crap shoot. But it is very cheap. I bought my wax box for $80, cello for $75, and a 500 count vending box for $30. Pretty cheap fun for a quarter century old rip. Seeing the poor condition of the cards is frustrating though. I was 9 years old in 1981 and it was my first big year collecting as a kid. Funny, at the time I didn't notice the centering, tilts, or diamond cuts. Ahh, life was much more simple then!
<< <i>are the commons even worth the fee for grading? >>
Might be worth checking out the pop report to see what's been graded. With the $5.00 special it might be worth it. I'm working on a graded Brewers team set so I would always have an interest in 9's and 10's Just ordered some racks from BBCE so hopefully I can pull a few myself.
<< <i>I don't think the commons are worth squat unless they come back as a 10 and then you might not make much more than the grading fees. >>
That's not really the case. There was a Tigers Future Stars 10 that just closed for $82.00! Will that happen all the time?? The answer is no. But I do believe there is a market for low pop cards especially when the cards in raw form are hard to find without flaws. This wasn't a great year for Topps but the quality control issues make those 10's all the more desireable.
In looking at the current auctions on Ebay, the 10's certainly make a bit more than grading fees, so that wasn't a totally correct statement. There is a 1 of 2 Mike Proly that is at $60 and coolstufffast has a whole bunch of PSA 10 1981 commons listed that are attracting at least the minimun bid ($24.99).
The 9's are another story, the PSA 9 commons aren't even drawing a bid at the $2.99 opening with less than a day left.
I just sent in about 150 '81 topps cards for modern special. They were all star cards though. I will probably regret this once I get grades back, but hindsight is 20/20.
PSA 10 hof cards have been going for a small premium lately on e-bay.

Why Not? 1mouz could be the first non-Brazilian person to travel back in time...

<< <i>Hope I don't die...I just busted a box of 81 Topps Baseball and ate the gum. I also got a really great Rickey Henderson! >>
You should be alright, just dont eat that Henderson! It really is a great looking well centered card.

a couple of both...horribly centered though
Very amouzing. Nice cards.
I have a 3 box rack case - I did give a rack with a Ryan on top - too bad it wasn't centered nicely.
I agree - quality is a crap shoot.
