Genuine or Fake

As per other thread:

There's a mark on the obverse of this 1911 Sovereign under George's chin in front of his throat.

The reverse looks weakly struck with no 'muscle' in the knight's chest and the horses 'reign' being very light almost non-discernable across the neck.

Is this coin a genuine or fake ?

I'm thinking fake but I am by no means an expert. More of a gut feeling and my gut has been wrong many times.

There appears to be a "dot" in front of the king's brow. If raised, that would kindle my suspicion.

  • The dot in front of the kings brow is not raised, it is a little 'hole'.

What concerns me more is that the edge on the reverse is a lttle raised and a little 'sharp'.

The photo isn't the best and my battery has just died again so it will have to do till tomorrow.

  • Jewellers Copy, a type of sovereign fake.

There is an Australian Jeweller on Ebay who makes these still, he oftem mismatches the coins ie Edward VII on a 1925 reverse etc, he also puts in very large letters: "Catalogue Value $2500" but never mentions they are copies, been trying to get him naru'd for ages.

That is not a genuine Sovereign.

But maybe it's a genuinely SCRATCHED sovereign?

  • Hi Thiggy. image

    Sovereign problem sorted. image

  • Best way to spot these coins is generally the overall look, they do just "look wrong".

They are mostly cast and then polished so a lot of detail disappears, they stick out like the proverbial dogs b*lls when placed with other sovs.
  • Yes, unfortunately I bought it through a fuzzy photo on the bay.

    Trying to send it back.

Thanks for the help BTW appreciated.

The porous surfaces suggest a cast copy.
  • Are these jewellers copies made from real gold ? If so what is their gold content ?
