coin bearing 'ENTHUM'

Folks: I have a horribly worn copper or bronze coin about the size of a U.S. cent. One side is completely worn and no image or lettering is visible at all, and the other side is worn almost completely. It is not worth posting a scan, because all that you would see is... well, nothing. I even tried scanning it at 1200 dpi in 16.7 mil colors, and no way: it's just too hard to see the lettering. The naked eye and a loupe win out, but none of my technology.

Here is what I can make out: around the rim of one side are letters that appear to be "ENTHUM", and in the center of the same side is a vague image of a shield, probably bearing a crown at the top.

Does anybody know what 'ENTHUM' might be?

  • Just searched high & low in order to beat ajaan & wybrit of the mark image but unfortunately I didn't find anything relating to ENTHUM in my yearbook.

A google search revealed that it might be an Indian word however it didn't correspond it with an English word.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help. image

BTW Coltrane's nice - listening to the link now.

I suspect the "enthum" is only part of a word; one word that occurs to me is "Fürstenthum", a variant on "Fürstentum", German for "Principality", or "Kurfürstentum", translated "Electorate". I'm sure I remember seeing it written out in full like that a few times in one of the Krause catalogues, somewhere in the German states, but I can't find an example at the moment. image

Unfortunately, if that's the only word that's readable, it may not help much with the ID, as the actual name of the principality is likely in the missing area. Still, "Unknown German State" is more info than you had before.

  • Hello --

    Thanks very much.

These are very helpful suggestions: I'll label it as a likely German state, ID unknown.

    Have an ENTHUM day, y'all.

  • Not with my current technology. Even a very hi res scan (see above) does not show up the letters. They are hard do see -- naked eye and loupe only. Sorry!! image
