Some Bust Half Dimes with Cuds -- bunch of photos!

BarndogBarndog Posts: 20,454 ✭✭✭✭✭
Rhedden has posted many seated half dimes and with that inspiration (and a few minutes with a camera and computer), I offer my some photos in my area of interest: bust half dimes. Both of the circulated coins are 1831. The first coin features a full cud over R on the reverse. This should be an easy identification of die marriage for specialists. The second coin features a retained cud over NIT on the reverse. Specialists will have an easy time identifying this die remarriage. Non-specialists, compare the two obverses and you will see that they are from the same die! I have taken a photo of each obverse and reverse and then offer some close-up photos (60X) for you to see the cuds more closely. The NIT cud has two close-up so that you may see how the die break extends into the rim of the coin.

Edit: By the way, the first coin came from Miller's Mint and the second from Brian Greer.

Second coin (same obverse die as the first coin, different reverse die):

Great coins! And even better cuds. The half dime denomination offers many such interesting varieties, whether it be in the Flowing Hair, Draped Bust, Capped Bust or Liberty Seated series.

If things like this interest you (and why wouldn't they?), you might be interested to see an article that I wrote for the February 2005 John Reich Journal, in which I outlined all of the known cuds for the Capped Bust half dimes. For this very short (9 year) series, there are 24 known cuds, and another was just discivered.

My own most recent Capped Bust half dime acquisitions with cuds came from the Jules Reiver/Heritage auction sale, and may be seen here:

    Great pictures. Got any more?

One in the pipeline and I will have to look in the current collection for more.

Got to pick mom up at the airport first!
  • I think I have an example of both of those cuds in my collection... but I'm at work and don't quite recall right at this moment... I think I have the first one, but I don't think it's as advanced, and I'm pretty sure I have the 2nd one... I'll check em when I get home image

Oh yeah, these 3 were picked up in the last 2 months image

Oh, and Barndog, I'm surprised you didn't grab the first one from Jade at FUN image It was quite clearly marked imageimage

Wow, great cuds. I don't have any Capped Bust coins with cuds to add, but enjoyed seeing these. I should have been at a coin show picking though half dimes this afternoon, but the show was cancelled for some reason.image

JrGman: The 1836 LM-1.2 that Jade had is a touch lower grade than my example. I have included a photo of the obverse of my coin so that people may see how the stars opposite the cud really had no chance to be struck well with the large cud on the reverse.

I couldn't get nice photos of my 1830 LM-1.2, so the last one I can post is this one. The photo is the obverse of the 1832 LM-4 and depicts a retained cud above Liberty's cap. The photo is through a microscope and I could only get a decent shot of it if I slanted the coin, sorry about that. The coin is one of only five half dimes in my collection still in a holder (this one is NGC MS-62). A couple hundred other baby busties are free-rangin'

Enough of that, here's the retained cud.

George, you remember right. The 1832 LM-4 is an R-4 die marriage. I just posted another half dime to another thread that I know you have an example of (the same die marriage used to be your avatar and I know I recall that well)

Excellent thread Barndog! I'm bummed that I missed it for so long (we have company over so my computer time is null)(plus we had a break in last night ugh...)

Some really outstanding examples of cud's you guys have here. Cuds are one of the most interesting fascets of coins I think. The fact that you have a coin that is an example of a die in a terminal state is a very cool thing. I would expect that as soon as the fatal die defect was noticed in the mint it was retired which makes for a shockingly small amount of cud'ed coins out there for us to find.

George, you have a good memory. I did infact have an 1832 LM4 with the full retained cud above the cap, in VF problem free condition. I obtained the coin raw from Mark Emtman at the Santa Clara Expo a few years ago. One of the coolest retained cuds there are in the series in my opinion. You're also right that I don't own the coin any longer. It was sold a while ago when I restructured the collection. I don't honestly remember who ended up getting the coin but it may very well be a forum member. Below is a pic of the coin.

Haven't had the opportunity to photograph it -- and it will likely be some time before I get that chance. You didn't get a photo of it, did you?
