gold sovereign type set ?

I guess this would be an easy set to accomplish ?
I just got my first young victoria sovereigns, shield reverse, and st. george reverse....

Im starting to eliminate my redundant angels, 20 francs and diversify by type...

Ill start researching this tomorrow, but opinions in the interim ?

Forgetting Edward VIII, which is basically an unobtainable fantasy, his brother George VI is a very tough type to get. The only year available is 1937 and it is a proof only issue, cataloguing at £950 in Spink.

In addition, Elizabeth II, first portrait with "Britt Omn" (1953) is very, very difficult, basically impossible to obtain. You would have to skip that particular variety.

  • Been working on a obverse/reverse/mint type set for a few years:

The 1953 Issue was only made for the National Collections so none are available to collectors.

The 1937 one is pretty expensive but also very nice, have not got one yet but have a few of the half sovs.

The Elizabeth Proof Sovs from the 90's are near impossible to obtain in Australia.

Best idea is to do a monarch at a time,

Viccy is always a good place to start with 4 main Obv types (depending on how picky you want to be there is about 30 varieties), and 3 main reverse types and up to 4 mints at the end of her reign.

Could also include Ansell sovereigns as well.

Best way to start is try to find an eye catching version of the 4 main Viccy types:

    Young Head/St George
    Young Head/Sheild
    Jubilee Head
    Veiled Head

Then decide if you want to expand in there or go earlier or later image

  • I have a few Sovereigns and 1/2 Sovereigns although I am not a Sovereign collector at all.

    I have the following:

    !/2 Sov 1914 - no MM
    1/2 Sov 1878 - GB - XF 45 Eliasberg
    1/2 Sov 1884 - GB - XF 45 Eliasberg

    1 Sov 1899 - No MM - Old head
    1 Sov 1917 - P
    1 Sov 1926 - SA

As well as an 1911 Sovereign - I'll see if I can post a picture and then see if you can tell me what's wrong with it.

Give me about 1/2 hour as the camera battery is recharging.
  • Here are some sub sets of sovs and halfs that were posted here.
