Ok... need some advise. Just bought a collection today. Consists of a nice 73 set, 2 84 fleer update sets, several other sets from 81t,d,f to 90t, d, f. I think I have all in between. Lots of extra stars rookies, 3 schmidts, 3 84 mattingly, 3 ripken etc....
With the collection are tons of extra commons and semistars. I am kind of new to this grading end of the hobby. Without grading as an option before, I would have pulled my stars and some rookies and just sent the rest to auction or even thrown it away. BUT with grading in mind should I KEEP any of the following commons and semis in hopes than maybe I can reap rewards with grading.
I have lots of
81-90 donruss
82-92 topps
81-90 fleer
88-90 score and UD
I mean are things like 84,85 donruss commons worth keeping around for grading purposes? Can I get decent money making it worth while with commons from any of these years?

For instance, you could start off by sending me the following cards:
1988 Donruss:
#172-BJ Surhoff
1988 Fleer:
#337-Bob Patterson
#368-Scott Bankhead
#370-Scott Bradley
1988 Score:
#22-BJ Surhoff
1989 Score:
#154-BJ Surhoff
#324-Scott Bradley

Do this and your karma will be enhanced, and you'll experience the joy of giving. It's a great feeling!
<< <i>Never ,ever throw away cards. Donate them to children's hospitals, give them to school kids, neighborhood kids, or even offer them to obscure player collectors like me. >>
Tho a bit OT, I want to say that unless a kid is in a coma or has been or lived on Mars for the proponderance of their life - giving them a stack of commons is worse than kissing your sister!
My son knew who Ken Griffey Jr. was at age 5 and when he was 7, opened packs in one hand and had a Beckett in the other.
Just my soap box, sorry for the hijack.
We now return you to your regularly scheduled movie.

I'm not a dealer or ebay seller, so I'm just using my gut reaction. That stuff is so plentiful that it may be hard to move easily.
One thing tho - you might have good luck breaking that stuff into team sets. Just one approach.
Maybe some guys here who have tried to move a large load will help.
I just wanted to congratulate you on a big purchase and wish you luck.
I remember when Aknot bought a large lot and was going to put the stuff up on ebay. He has disappeared off the face of the earth. He was a good guy and designed a lot of cool signatures for people including myself. That reminds me - time to put it back!
Good luck

I was actually serious about those cards I listed. I do have many obscure player collections and those are cards I need. I don't need multiples--one nice example of any card would be fine. I'll also send you a Paypal transfer to cover shipping costs.
Stone,
While some kids may already be more experienced with collecting and sit there with a Beckett guide and only want stars--there are many kids that would enjoy any card from their favorite team even if not a star; or if they are just getting into card collecting would enjoy any card they don't have--especially one from a year before they were born. I remember when I started collecting in the 1970's--I would buy the product that was available, and distinctly remember the thrill I had when another collector gave me a trade for some of my current stuff, and I got some cards from the 1960's in the deal. They might have all been commons, but I was thought it was very cool to get some older stuff--regardless of value. My Dad wasn't a collector, nor did I have any older brothers, so I was a "first generation" collector. I would hope there are currently also many new "first generation" collectors who would not be into the card-collecting game strictly as an investment. Chris' potential gift to some kids might even create some new collectors.
