Midweek + weekend 1984 Topps BB rack breaks (scans!)

I just got a couple of 1984 Topps baseball rack boxes from BBCE on Wednesday. Ordered on Friday, got the stuff on Wednesday. Nice.

Anyways, any particluar cards that are tough from this set? Anything to look out for?

I'll start posting rip results tonight. :-)

There are no where near enough cards graded in this set to tell if anything is tough. More than half of the monster set has no PSA 9 representaion and this is due purely to lack of submissions. Guys who want to tackle this set in PSA 9 and better will be nothing short of a pioneer.

He's putting together a registered set in PSA 9 or better.

  • Hes at 7.5% complete so I guess he would be the 84 topps go to guy! Actually the #1 spot is at 25% so im guessing there isnt many people out there who have a clue on what is tough from 84 Topps. Maybe DGF or someone else has put a raw set together and has an idea but I think 84T is uncharted waters.
  • I think I had one of the biggest 84 Topps submissions...over 400 different cards......I have 80- 9's left overs in my Ebay store..
watch the centering!!! I have a boat load of 9OC's that are borderline at best....and watch the chipping-notching on th dark backs.....

I did receive alot of 10's...mainly 9's.....but there is a lot of 90+ PSA 8's NQ hanging around that killed the deal......

Overall....plan on submitting alot yourself....and send a ton at a time!!

Mine were all pulled from a vending case....so figure the price of the case...price of grading...less slag cards.....I'll be lucky ot make a few $$$ , but still have 5K nm-mt singles and 9 complete raw sets...

Ok. I ripped through one of the boxes. I'll save the other for tomorrow.

Interesting boxes. The packs were great. No decomposing gum to deal with, no wax, almost no “throw away” cards per pack.

The box… kinda trashed. Obviously damaged by water. I inspected each pack and saw that the cards inside were just fine. The plastic may have kept any water away. There was a really weird black powder inside the box. It had the consistency of laser printer toner. Maybe 21 year old mold?

Anyways, on to the packs. In every few packs, one of the middle cards in the top pocket would be totally trashed. It looked like the machine that put the cards in the packs decided to eat one.

Now, the cards. Horrible, horrible collation. Some of the pockets had doubles, some of the racks, overall, had triples. In one of the packs, on it’s bottom pocket, there was a Dale Murphy showing on the front, and a Dale Murphy showing on the back. Ugh. Anyways, I did get to reap some of the benefits of this bad sorting, as I pulled close to 5 each of a bunch of HoFers (Schmidt, Rose, Seaver, Palmer, Sandberg, etc). Unfortunately, ZERO Ryans, Boggs, or Mattinglys. I did find one Strawberry, but one of the back edges had been ripped a bit. More than half the cards pulled were OC greater than 60/40. Edges and corners were kinda tough. There are some pretty commons in the bunch, but my eye was looking more for HoFers and period stars.

In terms of “gradable” stuff, only a few cards.

Besides the Mattinglys, the one thing I found myself missing was... the smell of gum!!!! I guess I'd need a time machine if I wanted that back.

I remember, as a kid, going through a rack box of 1990 Topps with a buddy of mine. We'd stuff our mouths with the gum as we were going through the box. Sigh. The good old days. Maybe I should invest in a bucket of Bazooka gum to gnaw on while doing box breaks.... image

I do not know at this time if there are any tuff cards to grade in this set. I do not think that everycard has been even graded once in this set. I have heard some say that centering is tuff to determine on this set, just look at the border on the bottom left near the headshot and then compare that to the top right border for eveness. I would say that your Hernandez cards show the best centering in that scan and would have the best shots at 10s, depending on corners and back centering. I do not know if this set has been studied like others, i.e. card placement on the sheets, like other sets.

    Good luck!

Looking at the pop reports, of cards that people actually send in, it seems that the Mattingly and the Gwynn are two of the tougher cards in the set.
Here's a run down of the top 10 submitted cards in the set and their total percentage of cards grading a 9 or 10...
    Mattingly: 3866 subs, 34%
    Ripken: 912 subs, 50%
    Ryan: 775 subs, 44%
    Rose: 477 subs, 50%
    Gwynn: 443 subs, 31%
    R. Henderson: 332 subs, 67%
    Strwaberry: 318 subs, 61%
    Sandberg: 221 subs, 50%
NL SO leaders: 204 subs, 57% (6 new 10s were added just this month!)
    Brett: 199 subs, 58%

Ok. Just finished ripping the last box. Pretty good take. Oddly enough, there was only one Strawberry out of both rack boxes. Fortunatly, my utter lack of Ryans and Mattinglys was made up for pretty quickly... 3 of each! This box resembled the previous box in the poor sorting. I got two of the Mattinglys in a single rack pack. Pretty nice pack! Anyways, this box yielded some pretty nice cards. I'll need to go through and do some more inspections, as there are many cards with perfect corners and edges, that fall within 40/60 or better centering.

In terms of oddities, check out the front and back of this Boggs...

There were 10 cards like this. Nice fronts, miscut backs. Check it out, I got 3 in a row!

Fun break. Not enough of an rip fix though. I need more!!!!!
