What are the hardest cards from the 50's to find in NM or better?

Curious what everyone's top 10 list would be.

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • I'd throw '50 Drakes into the mix, as well. I've been looking for a solid EX example for a while now and no dice.

There was a PSA 5 Berra on Ebay last week...

  • Yep, and didn't reach the reserve at $207. A PSA-5 Snyder recently went for $270+. I think these numbers say something about scarcity.

You are right, however, there have been a good number of them on eBAY recently (probably more in the last 2 weeks than in the previous 6-12 months), but they seem to have very high reserves...and most are going unsold.

edited to say: you snooze, you lose. I did not realize that the seller had relisted many of these without reserves last week. The Berra that did not reach the reserve at $207 went for $130 without a reserve. Painful for the seller, I'm sure.

I picked up the PSA 4 Ennis - and I'll be very happy when it arrives.

My top 10 toughest cards from the 50s in psa 8 or better are as follows(in no particular order):

    1)1952 Bowman Large Spencer #9
    2)1952 Bowman Large Miller #27
    3)1952 Bowman Large Hancrock #36
4)1952 Bowman Large Van Buren #45
    5)1952 Bowman Large Schweder #72
    6)1952 Bowman Small Cook #87
    7)1952 Bowman Small Heath #91
    8)1952 Bowman Small Bemers #93
    9)1952 Bowman Small Johnston $108
    10)1953 Bowman Gillom #40

I believe that most of these are pop 1s with 3-4 pop 2s. All very, very tough.

  • Dont forget the 1952 Berk Ross. Notoriously difficult for decent cards.

In speaking from experience I have to say the 1950 Bowman Mel Parnell card #1 was a "B". Any card #1 for that matter in the 50's is a b
Now looking for a 1950 Bowman Baseball Box as pictured below.

To date, PSA has graded only one '59 Morrell as NM:

I agree that the toughest NM cards of the '50s are the regionals.
