He's got nothing to do with it aparently but as for his wife she's placed bets with Rick Tocchet's gambling ring. $500g's as of late including $75,000 on the super bowl.

    Behold Janet Betzky

Seriously though who knows what players have placed bets and yeah right they didn't bet on hockey. What if Wayne really did bet or Lemieux etc.. and what if it's proven that they did bet on hockey will they be shunned from the HHOF?

    Scary.

Given how strongly most of these Rose hating yahoo's feel, they would say yes.

Even if Gretzky bet on hockey he will never be kept out of the HHOF. He will be kept out of this and will have a "self imposed" punishment, just like Michael Jordan's 16 months off before unretiring the first time.

Funny how the only name they released as placing bets was ????????????????? You guessed it Janet Jones ! Kind of weird and if I was a NJ state trooper I would be alot more scared then say an NHL Hockey player ? I feel sorry for the trooper that had nothing to do with it that placed a bet on the Super Bowl hoping to make a buck or two and now he is gonna get it and labled as a "gambler"! Lose his pension and his job probably! Sucks to be that guy!I can't imagine these guys are that stupid to use their real names ? I am sure once the DA gets ahold of them they will sing like a bird to get a lesser sentence!

The Trooper seems to be pretty shady though. They found tons of merchandise at his home like many plasma screen tv's and stuff. Maybe I've watched too much Sopranos but to me that looks like he's a shady cop with ties to the mob.

It will be just a matter of time before all the names of the players who have placed bets come out.. They have lots of wire taps apparently so they should have a list of some of the games that were bet on etc.. Tochett is facing 10 years if guilty. Tochett saying it's not a hockey thing it's a football thing doesn't help him out. It can be taken differently but to me that means yeah I did it but just with football.

I just watched a EPSN interview clip with the Lt. Colonel of NJ and he said that there was no betting at all on Hockey that they know of. With that said I no longer really care.. as long as hockey games weren't thrown etc.. Hopefully Tochett gets off he was a great player and seemed to be a classy well respected guy.

you got a wife that looks like that and she gambles too. what a great life!
  • Even though Wayne and his wife are happily married, most of the time Wayne is in Phoenix and his wife home in CA, which is a life style many athletes and wives are used to. I doubt Wayne would have his wife place bets for him with Rick Tocchet right along side of him. There would be a much easier way to do it than involving a third party. I have no doubt that Wayne is innocent of all charges, but his wife could have placed bets on her own. They are both adults and live seperately most of the year, and his wife has her own wealth also. It would have been a lot easier to call Vegas than Rick Tocchet, but who knows what will come out in the wash. Just have to wait and see rather than point fingers and jump to conclusions....

$1.7 million in bets is a piddly amount in bookmaking circles. If they balanced their bets perfectly, their profit would be the 10% "vig" or $170,000.

Authorities are all over this because of the high profiles of the people involved.

Guy who owned a bar where I live in CA was running a decent size bookmaking operation and got busted in the 1980s. Authorities claimed he was doing $100 million A YEAR in "action" taking horse and sports bets including, reportedly several local pro athletes. Since it was his first offense he got two years probation and a $50K fine.

None of the "clients" were charged with anything. I think the laws vary from state to state, but in most cases, it is a crime to take bets (bookmaking), but making a bet through a bookie is NOT a crime. Therefore I highly doubt you'll see Wayne or his wife on trial. Tocchet, on the other hand, could be in hot water if he financed the operation.

Don't want to get too political but gambling should be taxed, not legislated.

PS. And yes, I do believe Pete Rose belongs in the Hall of Fame.
  • I have a bit of experience in the world of sports wagering (a little too much, actually), but have yet to meet a woman who places bets on NFL games. Does anyone really believe she was calling these in for herself? No way...

It shouldn't matter, as the betting didn't involve nhl games, but to think Gretzky had nothing to do with this is being naive... You can't work closely with someone (and have your wife calling him regularly, for chrissakes) and not know what they are into, especially on the level Rico Tocchet appears to be on...

The difference with Rose is that he lied about it for 20 years. Fay Vincent (or was it Giamatti?) gave him an out and he didn't take it, which means he needs to take his medicine like a good little boy.

Other differences that are worth mentioning (although they're not entirely relevant).

    1) Pete Rose is, by all accounts, a total tool, and I'm sure there are plenty of people in MLB who relished the opportunity to ban him from baseball.
    2) Pete Rose is not indisputably the best player to ever play his sport.

Actually, isn't Gretzky already in the HHOF? I am fairly certain that the NHL waived the mandatory five-year waiting period for both Gretzky and Lemieux when they retired (Mario's first retirement).

Yea...I'm sure (LOL) that Wayne is real pleased right now with his wife's involvement in gambling.
