Now THAT's a shipping charge!

I believe the seller is among us here, but did not answer my email about the possibility of a listing error. THIS shipping charge must be accurate. Absolutely insane and abusive. I'd love to buy the card but won't on the principle of that outrageous shipping charge. What? Is he gonna walk the card to my house? I know--don't bid and move on, but 7.00???...SEVEN dollars? Sev-en bucks? egads!

Out the THEIF! That is rediculous. If this poor sap wants $25 for the card, then LIST it at $25 and don't try to decieve with an outragous shipping charge.
No one should bid on this fool's auctions.
My Auctions
I don't have a problem with high shipping charges-- I figure just bid accordingly and the problem resolves itself. But I do think it's a poor business model, since many guys DO have a problem with it and won't bid out of principle.

2. It was a 150. card.
3. No, you cannot have your dollar back.
4. I usually charge $4, but it was $5 just for you.
5. If you had a problem with it you could have emailed me and told me about it--like I did the seller and got no response.
6. If the seller's shipping charge was $5, this post wouldn't have happened.
7. At least I sent your card rather than offer it to someone else after you agreed to pay "a more than fair price" for it.
I could go on but with you, what's the point? You're a bit out of line here.
<< <i>Just a quick note - I have bought from this seller before, and the charge per card was never $7.00. Either he made a mistake on this listing, or it's a recent change by him. >>
I don't think its an oops, as all his current auctions are charging $7.00.

When I said to out the guy, I realize that we know his eBay handle, but I am interested to see if he is a contributor here or just a member that posts once in a while.
My Auctions
I emailed and asked. My email was ignored. Perhaps I should give him the benefit of the doubt. I offered to pay $4 for the card if I won it under $50 and asked if that was acceptable...no reply. If the card goes above $50, that's an additional 1.30. Over 100.00...you get the idea. Then we're talking about a reasonable shipping charge. I just got geeked up about it as it was a card I wanted to bid on, but the charge was excessive.
Jordan,
Do you have access to a Gem Mint 1990 Topps AS Rookie Griffey Jr.? It's odd, but I have been looking on eBay for over a year for one and notta! I have a 1990 Topps factory set and the Griffey in it was 3/4 high. I would love to land an absolute stunner of that card. Racks? Factory set case? Which do you think would likely yield such a specimen?
dgf
Phil- I don't. I think they were only issued in the racks and factory sets and I actually have never opened either. I am sure there are some out there and if I were you, and my thoughts on the distribution are right, I would go with the factory set case over a rack case. There hasn't been a 10 yet which is surprising as how early in his career this is.
If I am off in the distribution LMK, but good luck in the search.

Notice not only the beautiful scan of the card so I can see what I'm buying, but that he also states insurance is optional, meaning it is not included in the charge.
WOW.

Try buying a few cases of PSA Storage Boxes from CU.
Years after said CU/PSA storage boxes purchase, I'm still traumatized!
rbd
edit:
Like the sucker I guess I am, I'm still doing business here, even though CU charged me "totally insane shipping costs" for my PSA storage supplies I ordered from them!
...Collectors Universe's shipping costs really did "stink to high heaven" for my purchases!
Boy! I'd luv to get a CU rep to come on this thread and address my claims, on just "how can CU justify charging such outrageous shipping costs to its CU members"? In my opinion, they can't justify such high shipping costs! To me its just seems like a very low class way of a another public company just making some additional profits on the "backs of CU members". I also view it as "sort of CU's measurement" (...a "slap in the faces of CU Members") on just how much CU really cares about its' members who do renew their respective (PSA/PCGS, etc.) CU Memberships, year after year, order supplies for their PSA, PCGS hobby material, and, all the while CU is"bending you over and jamming it right up yours!", by making you pay those insane shipping costs for their supplies and products, ...well enough of my "ranting and venting" on this subject, ....I said a real mouthful! LOL~!~!~!~!!

If you're willing to pay $25 for the card - does it matter if it is $20+ $5 shipping, $25 with free shipping or $1 plus $24 shipping?
It's just like the vig at auction houses. 10%, 15%, 17.5%? Some of the amounts are RIDICULOUS, but I just adjust my bids down so I'm out of pocket the same amount at the end of the day. I guess, for me, life is too short to worry about which pocket is paying for what. If I'm willing to pay $25 for the card - I don't care how it is split between auction price and S&H, as long as everything is clear and disclosed from the beginning.
Steve
However I've tried that model for cards - and won't do it again. What you save on Ebay charges you pay out in lost bids.
Buying and selling online can be learning experiences if you are open to them. I've found that honest appraisals, low starting bids and shipping that covers the cost of the item works best for cards.
However there is a lot of action with cards. I'm selling some comic books this week using that method and am afraid I'm going to get creamed because there isn't as much action with them. Hopefully I'll be wrong.
Oh well. That's why it's a hobby - not a business...

Phil are you talking about the base card from the 90 Topps set? Or are you talking about the 90 Topps glossy AS rookie?
There is picture of the glossy AS in my Griffey collectors showcase set thing errrrrrrr or whatever they want to call it? That I doubt anybody looks at because it is cluttered , not my set , just everybody's collector set thing! I still think they should add hit counters to the top of everybody's set ?

<< <i>rbd, Are you talking about the plastic red or blue cases that hold 25 graded cards. I like those alot, just wish they made bigger ones. I know what you mean on shipping cahrges for those. Absolutely outrageous! I must say, I do like the way each card has its own slot in the PSA cases.
Bob >>
Yes!
I've bought red plastic PSA storage boxes, I've bought the blue ones and I've bought plenty of the "heavy card board" PSA storage boxes. All with those "lofty Collectors Universe shipping charges".
rbd
edit: It sucks, I'm not giving CU another "red cent" for more PSA storage boxes! In fact, I bought 25 graded card storage boxes on ebay. They are twice as strong as the PSA card board storage boxes, better priced. And the shipping? $ 11.52 for all 25 boxes (UPS ground!)...

<< <i>Is this just a principle thing? I honestly don't get it - as long as you adjust your bid accordingly, who cares? >>
Yeah, just a principle thing where I'm concerned.
John,
Yes. I'm looking for the base card. It's just so odd that one never appears in an SGC 98 or PSA 10 holder on eBay. I see the debut card multiple times a week & never a base card. I was going to post about it a month ago and thought "maybe THIS is the month". Again, it never appears. It';s a card I would figure would be listed every week as well. Do you have one?
dgf
I have won many lots for 10 bucks and paid 17$ but there's nothing I can do.
So I guess this is like the weather.....?
I do agree with principle and either not bidding or bid accordingly.
I get annoyed, also, when they don't return your emails!

Now, now Phil. I offered up no excuses on this subject. Did not deny it one bit. I offered you a certain card that you were willing to pay dearly for and a week later I shipped it somewhere else because lust for other certain cards got into my morals and lust won out. Not sure why you brought that up here but fine. You know, no matter how much I disgust you, no matter what you say in reply to this, I am going to make good on that snub eventually. Again, no matter what you say.

Yes - wasn't it because that's what UPS charges, and UPS goes right by his office so he doesn't actually have to drive down to the Post Office to do his shipping? At least, that is the part that sticks with me.
<< <i>I get annoyed, also, when they don't return your emails! >>
Mike,
You're right. Thats what bothered me the most. It made it seem underhanded somehow.
Dan,
Okay. There is one thing though. Are you aware of my 1978 Topps baseball set? I'm not sure what it would grade out at, but I can tell you it is well above 9.2 on the low-end. Frank & I have been working on our sets roughly the same amount of time. I have kept mine raw for the most part, but the quality of the cards is similar. In fact, I've been able to help him out in the past with a tough card or two. I've even pulled raw cards from my set that were pop zero's that he's gotten 10's on. His set is world-class and he will always help out a fellow set builder as well, as he has me. I would have been happy to work in some form of trade. I won't whine publicly about it again...or privately for that matter. I only put that up because I felt you were a bit out of turn in your unprovoked attack on me earlier. The glass house is always just a stone's throw away.
bottom line: we all agree that $7 to ship a $25 card is a bit excessive.

The argument, as I understand it, is that if you have a problem getting the card Paypal will only reimburse you for what the hammer price was for the card-- and this doesn't include S&H. Thus, if you won a card for $5 with $10 shipping, and the seller was a deadbeat, the most you could recoup is $5.
The "can I have my dollar back?" was intended to get a chuckle out of you

I've never dealt with a deadbeat seller before (knock on wood), but this is what I read on an Ebay forum re: exhorbitant shipping charges. If I'm wrong, well-- it wouldn't be the first time!
