BCCG?

I have a question about a couple of cards that I have aquired. They are graded BCCG 10. Is this the same as a BGS or PSA 10? I am new to the whole graded card aspect. What do I need to be sure of before I would send a card to BGS or PSA? Any comments or help will be very helpful.

No they are not. Rule of thumb seems to be a BCCG 10 is a PSA 7 or 8 or returned evidence of trimming.

    Good for you.
  • Thank you but what is the difference?

the difference is that BCCG will grade an inferior card.

a card that would normally grade a 7 or 8 in psa or sgc will get the bccg 10.

could be a number of reasons. soft corner, centering, sheet cut etc etc etc.

I've only crossed one - a Staubach rookie that went from bccg 8 (ex+) to psa 7 (near mint). I had to crack it out to cross it to a psa 7, though. They're not going to give you decent grades on a bccg card if you send it in the holder.

A board member said he did the opposite - sent in a bunch of psa 8's to bccg and received bccg 10's on only 15% of them - so I doubt you'd get a 7 unless you damaged the card removing it from the holder (and their holders are a b****, BTW).

With bccg 10's, I'd say that most of the older cards will be in the bgs 8-8.5 range while more of the newer cards will be bgs 9's. I wouldn't expect any psa 10's or bgs 9.5's.

Also, you've got to pay more attention to the grade's text than the number. "Mint" equates to a bgs 9/psa 9 while gem mint is a bgs 9.5/psa 10. BGS 10's are "pristine" and are pretty rare.

This reflects my experience as well. I cracked a bunch of PSA 8 fleer update Bonds' once and received BCCG 10's on about 15% of them or so as well.
  • So then Basically the BCCG cards that i have are pretty much the same as the raw card then if not worse? I guess i can't argue too much because i got them out of a retail box.

I could never understand what this service (BCCG) was ever really good for?? You knew that the cards are overgraded and basically served as a cheap way to have a card slabbed for protection purposes, but the grade was useless.

  • Is BCCG a part of Beckett? or is it another one of those off-the-wall companies?

It is or was (?) part of Beckett's. It was there cheaper grading service or discount service.

The cards aren't overgraded, per se, there just graded on a different scale. If you know what that standard is then it shouldn't be a problem. I've bought plenty of BCCG 10 cards before knowing full well that they were going to be PSA 8 quality. If the price is right then the number on the slab is a non issue.

It's fine to be skeptical of other grading companies, but a guy should have some experience with the cards in another slab before he begins to formulate opinions on that company IMO.

Yes, BCCG is a part of Beckett, along with BGS and BVG.
