Auction Houses

I've won coins at some of the larger auction houses, but have never consigned to them. I was wondering ..... do they also charge a sellers fee or does the seller get the hammer price while the house gets the buyers fee???

  • Yep Terry is right, but it can still be a decent venue to sell....

I have consigned only once to an auction house. Not a pleasant experience for me. Yes, they do charge the consigner a fee, usually 10-20%.

Actually, Goldberg's have a 0% seller's fee, although some conditions may apply.

The seller's fee is negotiable like anything else; the more pudding you can offer, the more gravy you keep at the end of the day. It can also be wise to 'tag along' with a dealer's consignments, and thus also get a better rate.

I've always "tagged along" and received a 0% rate regardless of the major auction house involved.

It's also important to note that 'notable collections' almost always receive more than 100% of the hammer price....as grandma said, "one hand washes the other".imageimage
