Will PSA Grade Fat Cards?

I can't seem to get a straight answer from customer service. I need to know if they will grade extra thick cards. I checked the population reports and don't see any of the ones that I have so I am assuming they do not.

Cards like: 1996 Collector's Edge Advantage Super Bowl Game Ball Cards or 1997 Excalibur Game Helmets.

If anyone knows for sure please let me know.

Thanks Jack

  • That question has been bounced around before. I think the answer ended up being about 50pt. thickness in the paper stock. image

  • The problem with getting a definitive answer is that we need to see the card.
I know there have been many times that you could have multiples of the same card and have some fit the holder while others don't.

While this isn't scientific or absolute, I've been told by operations that our holders can handle card thicknesses up to approximately the thickness of 3 regular cards together.

If you are going to be at a show where we are offering onsite grading (The 2 Chicago Sun Times shows in March and November and The National, in Anaheim this July) we can actually take the card back to our sealers and ask if it will fit. It's a nice convenience if you are at one of those shows.

  • Thanks Carol,

As usual you are the star when it comes to finding out what is going on. I guess that would probably mean that they do not grade these cards. I would guess they are about the thickness of 5 or 6 cards a good 1/4 inch. Thats a shame they are realy unique cards and I would love to have them graded and put on the registry.

    Thanks again

  • Thank you!
You're right, if the card is that thick we won't be able to holder it at this time, although, you never know what may come up in the future.

Not sure if this helps much but the SignatureCut cards I make are the same thickness as 3 average vintage cards.. They get slabbed no problem. I would bet that they could holder a card the same thickness as four vintage cards stacked..

I'd bet if you slipped the slabbers an extra twenty they could slab those thick cards. They might be a little smooshed, but they'd fit!

    I'm envisioning something like this:

  • Mudflap02; Glad to see you've been reinstated!
  • It should be no harder to slab a William Perry card than it is to slab a Freddie Patek.........

I"m sure once they start slabbing packs thick cards will go in the same holder, probably with mylar.
