1972 TOPPS FOOTBALL

Have been lurking on these boards for about a year. Have a submission to share, amazing turnaround and some good grades. Have a couple questions to posit.

1)Is it worth getting commons graded that will come out PSA 8, other than for your own set. I posted my submissions on the vintage board, and out of 14 submissions got 11- 9's 2- 8's and 1 six (Staubach) expected. I am seeing PSA 8's on EBAY going for about the same as the $5 grading fee. Any thoughts on submission of 72 FB that is likely to come out PSA 8? Have not really collected FB, but have gotten hooked on this set. As some of you know the 9's are pretty hard to come by, have been very picky in what I submit. Went over the below submissions many times. Any advice or assistance would be appreciated?

2) Seems to me that graded sets are awesome, but expense versus value proposition is difficult. Many times the graded set does not represent the best relative value. IE cannot replace ie sell cards for what you have in them. Would like an opinion from you graded set guys. I usually buy what I like and am now trying to get better at evaluating what to purchase. The below cards 72 FB were bought for on average 50 cents a piece.

Your thoughts and advice would be greatly appreciated

  • California,

I have a 100% completed 1972 football set in the registry. My comments are don't start any set unless you love it! It's not a winning situation. When I started my set I was paying large $$$'s for 8's now they are a dime a dozen. 9's still command a reasonable premium but even some of them are slipping by on ebay for $12 - $15, a year ago the same cards were $99 and up. You have to love the set because even buying raw for .50 to 1.00 you still have grading fees, shiping and the chance that the perfect card comes back a 7 or 6. I love 72 football and will not ever sell my set unless I am financially destitute or have an unexpected nightmare but I don't think I would have finished it if I was not in love with it. I am trying to get the 71 set finished and I am watching guys pay $150 for a .50 Gus Otto. If I paid $150 for that card next year it will sell for $9.99.
Anyway to answer your question the only way that I think it's economically advantagous to grade commons is if you come accross an incredable set that you are reasonably guarantied will grade 8+ and you can pick it up for peanuts then it might be a good investment. I probably have 4 to 5 times more in my set than I will ever get out of it. Also, if you watch the population reports and buy great specimans of low pop cards you could feasably make money there becuase low pop cards are selling for stupidly high premiums over their true value. PSA does not address the market when it comes to low pops.
Anyway, good luck with whatever you do. Please let me know where you pick up cards that will grade out at 9's for .50 I would like to shop there for a change.

Looking for 1971 Topps Football PSA 8 NQ or above, and slowly working my way into the 1962 Topps Football Set. Check out my 1972 Topps Football Set 100% Complete.
  • Thanks for the reply and insight. I am not really a FB guy but these cards were beautiful. I am going to start buying what I love on my radar 1961 fleer basketball, early 70's basketball and 50-60's fb. Think all of these are undervalued and under appreciated. Where r u located. Big show out here in Cali this weekend at Hollyword Park/Naxcom. Thanks for the time and the post

  • Barry:

The 1972 Topps Football set is a great set loaded with a lot of HOF rookies (including Staubach), the last card of certain HOFs (Sayers), and a second-year card of HOF Terry Bradshaw. It is a great set to collect.

As to your question, it won't be cost-effective to grade PSA 8's (except for certain stars) except for your own set. In the first two series, every card is at least a pop 10 in PSA 8 with the exception of the following:

162 Ernie Kellerman (pop 7) (one PSA 9)
166 Clint Jones (pop 6) (three PSA 9)
168 Ronald McDole (pop 7) (two PSA 9)
262 Ray May IA (pop 8) (five PSA 9)
263 Bobby Douglass IA (pop 9) (two PSA 9)

Although the set is popular, and there a quite a few people trying to complete the set, even these cards probably are at best break even.

As to the 3rd series, don't be fooled. Although this series was a limited regional release (as well as available as a complete series directly from Topps), the pops of these cards are actually much higher. There is not a single card in the 3rd series with a pop of less than 15 in PSA 8. Paradoxically, although the overall raw population of these cards is lower than the first two series, the population of high grade cards in that series is much higher. I believe that this is due to the fact that: (1) the cards were available as a series directly from Topps and thus maintained better condition as they didn't need to be packaged in wax and handled as much; (2) as the last series, they were probably handled less because they came out later in the season and thus weren't carried around for months for trades, etc. by their owners.

As a result, there isn't a reason to overpay (with a few exceptions) for 3rd series cards. Grading 3rd series cards will not be profitable in PSA 8 because the cost of raw 3rd series is too high relative to the return.

Now, if you have PSA 9 quality, that is a different story. The following cards have a population of 3 or less in PSA 9:

1 AFC Rushing Leaders (pop 1)
    16 Ron Hornsby (pop 3)
    17 Chip Myers (pop 3)
    19 Fred Hoaglin (pop 2) (1 PSA 10)
    20 Carl Eller (pop 2) (1 PSA 10)
    25 Steve Owens (pop 3)
    27 Mike Clark (pop 3)
    29 Checklist 1-132 (pop 3)
    37 Ronnie Shanklin (pop 3)
    39 Ken Reaves (pop 2)
    58 Ken Bowman (pop 2)
    68 Richard Caster (pop 2)
    71 Bob Lee (pop 3)
    73 Henry Allison (pop 3)
    77 John Fuqua (pop 3)
    78 Ken Houston (pop 2)
    86 Jim Otto (pop 2)
    93 Ted Hendricks (pop 2)
    112 Mel Gray (pop 3) (1 PSA 10)
    115 Garo Yepremian (pop 3)
    117 Jeff Queen (pop 3)
    118 Norm Snead (pop 2)
    133 AFC Semi-Final Game (pop 2)
138 NFC Championship (pop 0) The current Holy Grail of the set
    151 MacArthur Lane (pop 3)
    162 Ernie Kellerman (pop 1)
    164 Jake Kupp (pop 2)
    166 Clint Jones (pop 3)
    168 Roland McDole (pop 2)
    175 Tom Dempsey (pop 1)
    176 John Charles (pop 1)
    177 Bobby Bell (pop 3)
    179 Bob Trumpy (pop 1)
    194 Fred Cox (pop 3)
    199 Altie Taylor (pop 3)
    203 Tom Beer (pop 2)
    204 Buck Buchanan (pop 3) (1 PSA 10)
    205 Larry Wilson (pop 2)
    211 Bill Nelsen (pop 2)
    214 Irv Goode (pop 3) (1 PSA 10)
    217 Pat Fischer (pop 2)
    222 Errol Mann (pop 3)
    228 Pete Liske (pop 3)
    233 Spider Lockhart (pop 1)
    242 Glen Ray Hines (pop 2) (1 PSA 10)
    246 W.K. Hicks (pop 3) (3 PSA 10)
    249 Frank Nunley (pop 1)
260 Mike McCoy IA (pop 1)
263 Bobby Douglass IA (pop 2)
    320 Bob Wallace (pop 3)
351 Ken Willard IA (pop 3)

Any of those in PSA 9 would give you a good return.

Good luck in collecting the set. If you are interested in selling any of your PSA 9's, let me know.

I am the winner of the 1 of 1 PSA 9 Mike McCoy. I sold it to a buddy of mine on the registry today. LUChampions. We are both die hard Packer Fans from Wisconsin. He traded it to me for his PSA 8 and a PSA 7 Bart Starr Rookie. Of course I owe him some $$ but it was great giving the card to someone who will never sell it (unless he gets a 10).

I have been working on my 1972 since Dec 2004. I have seen the PSA 8 prices of the first two series drop from $8 each down to $6. The 9's are dropping too from $30ish to $18-$22. The third series is actually easier to get because of the Populations. Hell, 8's in that series are cheaper than 9's of some commons in the first two series.

I love this set and will be slowly upgrading. 94% and counting.

The hard part about this set for me are those damn Cowboy fans pushing the prices of those players.

Best of luck with the set if you plan on collecting it.

    californiacards2,

I would be interested in the #4 card if you are selling.

    Thanks,

    High grade Redskins (pre 1980)
  • Thanks for all the posts will buying more 72 FB and will be starting the 61 Fleer basketball and looking to start some of the smaller 50's and 60's FB sets. Thanks to all the effort in educating me on the PSA population and I will be using that to select my graded cards. Lets keep the 72 FB and BB threads going. The PSA 9 #4 Passing leaders is not for sale very proud of that card. And I too was raised in Texas so somewhat partial to the old Cowboys of Clint Murchison days.

    Thanks again from the newbie

Great set--earlier this year I completed my 72 set by finally getting a nice #351 Ken Willard IA. I had bid on several here and there, but the great condition ones always seemed to sell for more than I wanted to spend. (I'm a low budget bottom-feeder)

My set is not graded, but I still love it all the same.
    Good luck and have fun.

I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.
