Paging all Mexican revolutionary coinage experts

First of all, let me greet all of you Darksiders! I've been absent for over a year, I think, and I'm glad to come back here and see many familiar faces (well, nicknames at least).

I know that I owe you a lot of my weekly coins (some of you might remember the tradition that I started and tried to keep for a while), but instead, I'm going to ask you for a little favor. What I have here is a little piece of Mexican revolutionary coinage, namely a Puebla (Tetela del Oro y Ocampo) 2 centavos coin dated 1915 (KM#759). As I see it, it is poorly struck, just like the majority of those coins, but has minimal wear. What really troubles me is that it may be a restrike and not a geniune piece (Krause mentions restrikes of this type), and I have no idea how to tell if it's a restrike or not. I doubt that anyone here in Moscow can enlighten (endarken image ) me on this one, so the Darkside forum seemed to me the most logical place to come looking for help.

So what do you think? I'll be grateful for any info on this one.

WOW! A voice from the past. I get a red x for the obverse image, but from the reverse it looks real to me. I've had a couple, well really one, of these and it looks OK to me.

The obverse image has somehow been removed from the uploaded files. I will correct this as soon as I get home.
    Thanks for the reply, ajaan!

  • I know very little about these, but here are a couple of listings claiming to be restrikes. The first auction says the restrikes were made with rusted dies, causing bumps in the fields. Based on that info and the picture in Krause not showing the bumps, I would guess yours is a restrike.

This is an interesting series for which answers are not that clear... If there were restrikes from rusted dies, then this coin is a candidate. But I would not just concede because this area has further research that needs to be done...

Lack of detail might also be from someone trying to clean up an old rusty die. image

  • Thanks everyone!

After reading your replies, I'm inclined to think this is indeed a restrike. That's too sad.
