"Birthmark" variety does not make any sense.

You can not have a birthmark in your hair. You can have patchy alopecia, but a birthmark by definition would not show through dense hair.

The "Assassination" variety would be a better descriptor.

  • I'm sending in 33 never opened 1967 sets out of there mint boxes plus 2 or 3 opened once to confirm merchandise. I hope to get a few nice ones! Any guesses on how many 67's ,cams or dcams i'll get?image

Sure - I'll guess on your 33 never opened sms sets - I'll be optimistic.

Cents - no cams or dcams
Nickels - 4 cams no dcams
Dimes - 2 cams no dcams
Quarters - 1 cam no dcams
Halfs - 4 cams no dcams.

No guess on numerical grade. Its hard to make 67's and 68's.

My point in posting is that if I were trying to make a few nice coins, I would open the sets and only submit those that have a chance of making dcam or high grade. (Except I would submit cents if they would make cam).

The "shotgun approach" will cost you alot in grading fees but the chances of making high grades is not very high. But if I was a recent lottery winner, I might try it.

  • I appreciate the analysis. I will be sending them off on Tuesday and will report back the results. I thought I would only grade the 66pluses and pay the $2 for all the ones that don't grade. This is for my wife's Mint Set so I am not acting as rationally as I would in business. Like most ,my goal is to get as nice of a set as is possible.image
  • I've opened them up.
That turned out to be good advice.
11 sets obvious losers_The rest ho hum.

I am glad to hear that you opened the sets.

Sending unopened SMS sets would have been a very bad idea. Since there is no "special label", like first strike, to be had on these, there is absolutely no reason for you not to open them and only send the best coins. Also, they do not need to be sent to PCGS as "sets". Each set can easily be opened, and just the best 1 or 2 coins can be sent in separately.

Maybe you already know this, but from your statement about the "11 Sets" are losers, it sounds like you may think they have to be sent in as a group.

The truth is that most of these SMS coins should never be graded. I have looked at thousands of them to find the coins in my sets.
