Say it isn't so Joe .... Montana ....

What are your feelings on this story? Montana allegedly didn't come to the Super Bowl because he wasn't guaranteed enough money for his appearance:

Sad. Glad I am not a Niner fan. Though I live up north I was raised in LA so have Ram/Dodger blood! The whole state of Nor Cal rests a lot on everything "Super Joe" does. Speak up NO-Cal defend your demi-god!?

Hey.. the guy's gotta eat, right? I mean... "Do you know how much insurance in on a Ferrari?"
Seriously though... I don't mean to bad-mouth one of the greatest to ever play the game, but he could have been more pleasing to the fans Sunday. Who knows, maybe he was fishing with Bradshaw?

He was probably busy doing one of those cheesy Fed-ex commercials again.

Montana was scheduled as the "main event" autograph guest at one of last year's Toronto Sports Card Expos. Despite a signed contract he stiffed the show's promoter with less than a days notice.

  • "Brush with greatness" story:

Joe Montana helped change my father-in-law's tire in Cabo San Lucas two years ago. He just walked up and asked if he needed a hand. Afterward he shook his hand and said "take her easy" as my father-in-law shot back "Go Niners...or Kansas City...whatever..." They both laughed, my f.i.l. said thanks very much and they parted company. It doesn't seem to me that this story is very complete. Million dollar, 3-time MVP's with attitude problems don't typically walk up to old men changing tires and offer to help. The odd thing is--and this is humerous, I think, is that my f.i.l. said there were people all around the area at the resort and no one else helped. Further, he didn't know if he should offer Joe a tip. He didn't want to insult him so he opted for the firm hand-shake.
Unnamed source stories like this one in the link typically are one-sided and incomplete. They typically have some other agenda.
Lastly, if they were offered 1K for an appearance, I don't blame them for saying "no". I would demand a minimum of 5 grand to go to Detroit this past weekend and I'm just a short, stocky, furry italian guy that no wants to see. A thousand bucks to travel to the cold and get involved with today's media types is insulting for me and I would imagine Montana & others. An employee of mine gets 300 bucks for incidental expenses when he travels for a weekend to a seminar that the Academy pays for. He is working on our behalf and as a valued representative of our school we treat him as such. He isn't anyone special to the public like a 3-time MVP, he's just a regular "Joe". A thousand bucks for the SUPERBOWL???
You gotta be kiddin' me. I'd be disappointed if he took the dough. Clearly the NFL needs it more than Joe.

I heard that "he would not have turned down the job to flip the coin" that they asked Tom Brady to do. I am guessing that this had a role in his sudden decision to not participate. I guess 4 years of "Brady is the new Montana, etc." topped by the league taking Brady over him for the coin flip put him over his limit.

They also said Bradshaw had a "different" kind of relationship with Steelers fans after he retired. He may have been unsure about the reaction they would give him.
  • Montana is suppose to be here in Los Angeles next weekend at the Naxcom show. Maybe he didn't want to be gone every weekend, like his old playing days.

I was thinking of getting his autograph, but I don't really collect auto's and he's not cheap!

If a grand is good enough for Namath and Starr then it should be good enough for a guy like Montana. It should be considered an honor
to be on the field with those guys not a duty, lets just hope that when Joe gets old and broken down, and one day finds himself on a
table cut open needing a new heart, that the surgeon doens't take off his mask and ask for more money, or the fireman who rushes to
his billion dollar house when it is on fire! Put this crap into perspective!

  • The doctor & fireman in your scenario are not retired. They also are performing their "duty". Perhaps after their retirements they won't want to cut anyone open or rush into a burning building. Maybe they'd rather be at home with their families or have other commitments. You scenario, while noble, is completely unrelated to topic. Joe Montana simply didn't want to attend the event...or so it was written. If I say Kevin humps goats, it doesn't make it so. We don't know anything about what really went down. They guy's track record should give him the benefit of the doubt here anyway.

  • ...by the way, my pre-season NFL pick was Pittsburgh VS. Tampa (I didn't even have Seattle in the playoffs-woops!) What went wrong???

I was disappointed at first, but then got to thinking, if his story about needing to be at his kids game is true, then more power to him! I'm glad his priorities are straight. Family first, football later.

On Bay Area ESPN radio this morning, Ronnie Lott phoned in and pretty much vouched for Montana's story.

But, I've gotta wonder, why isn't Montana signing any "Super Bowl MVP" related stuff at the Naxcom show.

Although i am a Chiefs fan, I hope Brady got every dime coming to him getting booed from start to finish. Class act by smiling through it.

I thought that was really cool of Brady as well. I am sure he took it well because he knew that all the Steeler fans booing him were doing so because of the Patriots dominance over their team and the rest of the NFL the previous few years. I am sure he took it as a compliment.

  • IMO...... None of the players have any duty to do anything but play hard and fair; no
cheating with drugs and no betting against your own team.

If they follow the hard/fair rule, they should - and do - have the same option that we
all do: Go where you want to, when you want to.

Remember, we are not talking about "written-contract violations" here. Being pist
at these guys/gals just beacuse they are rich - and want to get richer - is sort of
    useless/senseless.

I wonder if some of the "no-shows'" cards will price-slip due to the controversy?
They will probably go up, just because everybody is talking/thinking about them.

Montana is one of the nicest athletes you will ever meet in person. I doubt the SB snub was his idea. I owned a card shop for a while not far from his home and heard lots of stories from people who would run into him alone and they all said he was a great guy and willing to sign autographs if asked.

However I also heard several stories of people who ran into Joe when he was with his wife, and all the stories had a common theme. The wife would snarl something along the lines of "Get a Life!" or "Leave Us Alone!" while Joe would just kind of smile sheepishly.

As much of a genius he was at QB, his life is now run by agents and more importantly, his wife, Jennifer. She is a pit bull in every sense, and extremely protective of him and from what I understand from neighbors, it is SHE that runs the show now, with his blessing apparently.
