Is it true that Montana didn't show up because he wanted a $100,000 appearance fee?

Yes, according to "NFL Sources". Guess he's hard up for cash.
However, wasn't Montana in a contest during the pregame show with Phil Simms and another quarterback to award a new GMC SUV to a lucky fan? I know it was probably taped, but was it taped prior to Super Bowl week?
Thanks
Remember these Chuck Norris Facts
1. When Chuck Norris does a pushup, he isn't lifting himself up, he's pushing the Earth down
2. According to Einstein's theory of relativity, Chuck Norris can actually roundhouse kick you yesterday
3. There are no such things as lesbians, just women who have not yet met Chuck Norris
<< <i>I guess Montana wasn't the only one - Bradshaw couldn't come to terms either.

Was Bradshaw there at all? If he was not, that is pathetic given he is a Fox NFL analyst and the Steelers were in the game!!
But refusing to show up because you're not paid enough? And you wonder why athletes get a bad rap.....
I wonder if Montana has a sufficient asset base from which he generates enough passive income to pay for his monthly expenses or if, as noted above, he needs cash and thus demands big appearance fees.
It would have been interesting to see Bradshaw and Elway next to each other. I understand that Bradshaw has been very negative on Elway in the past.
"Ya, I make alot of money - but I spend alot of money also!"
Another selfish athlete that does not give back to the sport that made him who he is. Too bad, I thought the parade of MVP's was one of the best parts of the whole experience, bringing together the generations.
I say all the more power to Montana and Bradshaw......hey, if you throw a party, you've gotta pay the band. Mick Jagger and the Night of the Living Dead got paid, why not two of the game's biggest names?

<< <i>Personally, I don't see anything wrong with what Montana did. The NFL has been getting too big for it's britches for years now......they expected two of their biggest Super Bowl icons to show up for nothing but a "thank you"?

EXACTLY
The NFL gets paid HUGE amounts by Fox to let Fox broadcast the game.
Yet the NFL expects to use on-air talent for free?
<< <i>The story I heard was that Bradshaw had a trip to Australia planned for a long time. >>
If that is true, it makes more sense. I would think the most legendary Steeler would not dis his former team over an "appearance fee" but a long planned vacation is another thing -- vacation time is valuable for everyone.

They were takin care of for being there.
1. tickets to the game
2. free airline tickets
3. free car rental
4. $1,000 payment
That's pretty good for one night away from home. Regarding Montana, however-- I heard he wanted to attend a basketball game in which his son was playing, thats why he skipped the Super Bowl, not because of any money issues.
Though if my Dad were a SuperBowl icon, I would probably say "Gee Dad, Go ahead and miss this one basketball game--the fans who supported you over the years really want to see you there." Heck, I would probably choose to skip playing in that one basketball game myself and attend the Super Bowl with my Dad just for the experience.

Akbar, I agree. I'd tell the old man the same thing. As for going to a basketball game, I'm leery to believe there was any/many high school/college basketball games scheduled on a Sunday during the Super Bowl. I could be wrong.
Either way, Montana was in Detroit all week and then LEFT. I don't think it would have been an inconvenience for him to stay.
shawn
Steeler Fans -- what do you think of the Most Legendary Steeler being absent last Sunday?
<< <i>Either way, Montana was in Detroit all week and then LEFT. I don't think it would have been an inconvenience for him to stay. >>
I agree - that's what makes his excuses sound especially weak. His spin doctoring is just making things worse.
Has Joe " moved on " from football when he is in uniform or in a stadium shooting a commercial that pays him big $$ ??
Showing up at the super bowl was not about money, or how big the league is. It was about showing respect and appreciation to the game, the fans, and the fellow legends who were also there. If he doesnt want to be a part of the game that gave him everything he has then he shouldnt be out there every other week using football to sell whatever product of the day that pays him the most money.

The NFL and Montana agreed to a players contract, and Montana performed under the contract. End of story. Montana doesn't "owe" the NFL anything.
Montana benefitted from the NFL...and the NFL benefited from Montana.
What's so wrong with that? Does anyone think for a second that he needed the money? Same with Bradshaw.
And how many of those super bowl MVPs had a good game, but were far from HoFers? Bradshaw and Montana stood up for what they believed in...how can you fault them for that (unless you're automatically assuming it was money...and even then, who cares? They *should* have been paid, all the players...hell, 150 MILLION people tuned in!)
<< <i>Montana says he wanted to watch his kid play basketball...that family comes first.

There are certain responsibilities that a player has/should have after leaving the game that made them multi-millionaires. This was one of them. If you're so concerned about family, then don't appear on the NFL Network all week pimping your new movie (Bradshaw) and don't appear at card shows at $250 a pop to sign a mini helmet (Montana).

What about the NFL?
Doesn't the NFL have a responsibility to the superstar players that made the NFL popular? Without Montana, what would the NFL 80's legacy be?
If Montana "owes" something to the NFL, then by the same token, the NFL "owes" something to Montana...and it sure is more than a measely 1K considering thr MILLIONS the NFL made off the game.

Absolutely not. They own NOTHING to the NFL. They gave the league the best years of their lives, and BOTH sides profited - not just the player.
To say they have a responsibility to show up at every NFL function (even one like the super bowl) and make them forgoe their family responsibilities is just ignorant. Ask most athletes their biggest regret, and it's inevitably not being there enough for their families, and missing their kids growing up.
Like RC said, where would the NFL be today if Montana wasn't leading his team to FOUR super bowl wins, dominating in a way that hasn't been seen again until Brady?
These players owe NOTHING to the league, to the game.

The LEAGUE and the GAME are what MADE these guys. Not the other way around Ax. The NFL was the NFL loooooooooong before Joe Montana and will be looooooooong AFTER Joe Montana. Joe should have been there. PERIOD

Of course it was around, but Montana and the 49ers took the league to unseen before heights of popularity, just like Magic and Bird did in the NBA.
Joe had 2 sons with basketball games that weekend...why is everyone on his nuts?
As Kornheiser said (as Montana on PTI today) "I'M JOE MONTANA!"
I think the people trying to make this an issue are Stealer fans trying to divert attention away from their team having the super bowl handed to them by the refs.

Why don't you put this in your sig line so you don't have to keep typing it out?

that is why a lot of them have another family away from home.

Your forgot the punctuation jrmac. I can't help but have your obssessiveness with me go uncompleted.
And this story has been forgotten as quickly as it was brought up, and with good reason.
