Prices going up????

I know we all have examples of some older or low population cards that the SMR is "behind" on pricewise, to say the least.

But I've sure noticed a lot of the "key" cards really going up, up, up since I've started tracking cards myself.

For example, a 71 Bradshaw rookie in PSA 8 books for 385, but sales have been $450 to $500 lately.
And the 57 Unitas rookie has a PSA 7 book of 390, but one recently sold for over $500. The 63 rose rookie seems to be going up too, along with a lot of 70's football stuff.

Always nice to see some of the cards we have going up in value and not down. Makes me wish I could've purchased some of these key cards earlier though.image I'll be paying out the nose now.

There have been some very aggressive buyers lately in the 1955 Topps set, causing some prices to spiral to silly levels. There are two PSA 7 #170's auctions ending within the next two days. One is going for $15+ which is normal. The second is going for over $60. Go figure.

A number of us stated around a year ago that 50's thru 70's football cards were way undervalued. I think they are still undervalued. I also think some high grade baseball insert cards (items) from the 60's and 70's are way undervalued.

I expect all of the 1970's Steelers RC to rise. The Topps All-American set is having a renaissance. Cards are available in all grades on ebay. Plus is has the perfect combination of reasonable scarcity and a small set. The PSA 8 Grange went for close to $600 and the centering was average at best.

I jsut bought a rose psa 8 rookie last week for 1600 and i thought it was a bargain compared to what the nice ones usually sell for. I had tracked them a while back and all centered ones always went for 1800 or more. the ones where centering was not as sharp would sell for 1200-1300. anyway I hope prices are going up , just not on the issues that I am currently buying
  • There was a 59 Koufax Psa 8 last night that I believe went for almost twice SMR. Prices do seem strong right now but then again I always consider this one of the best times of the year for hi grade vintage.

I just sold a 1984 Donruss Don Mattingly PSA 10 for $850. It SMR's for $500. I tracked two previous ones and one went for $710, and the other for $799.

Another one I feel is a little off is the 1994 Leaf Alex Rodriguez. I believe it SMR's for $240 in a PSA 9. The consistently go for between $300 and $400. I don't think I have ever seen one go for under $300.

Those are just two personal examples that I have noticed.

  • Yes, the SMR is low on a number of cards. Try buying a PSA 8 or PSA 9 Bruce Sutter or Goose Gossage rookie for the SMR list price. It's just not possible. Almost anything pre-1980 in baseball that is PSA 9 or 10 seems to be selling for close to or above the SMR price.

I collect 56 and 57 Topps and while you can get some stars under SMR on a routine basis, others go for more than 30% above SMR even in PSA 7.

  • because of Ebay, everything is about timing now. Before the internet, people wouldn't drop their prices that much. Stores and shows had pretty consistent pricing. Now, it's a crapshoot.
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!
