Whew--a milestone reached(40 vintage or semi-vintage sets complete)and this was one I had to complete card by card for the final few--mostly on ebay. The last card I got in psa 8 to complete the set was Ken Walters-#511 for which I paid about $175. By far the toughest was the pop 11(in 8) Curt Simmons(#451) which as I remember cost me around $1,000--possibly more. Other tough ones in the set for me were Wertz, Crandall, Murtaugh and Coker. The set has 17 psa 9s and 555 psa 8s and ranks ninth on the registry with a 8.03 set rating. As with most of my sets of this vintage I had a raw nrmt-mt set which I submitted and then upgraded the cards that were psa 8 or less. Thanks to Brian for all his efforts in scouting down cards for this set and to Joe Drelich who was very good on resubmissions with this set.
This gives me a pretty good run of Topps baseball sets in psa 8 or better from the 1960s. From 1960-68 I am only missing 1966(just 1 card) and 1962(4 cards including the nastiest card from the 60s-Don Landrum).
My goal remains 50 vintage or semi-vintage sets by year-end and ultimately 100.

Thank you--sometimes they come in bunches. There are still several 1 or 2 cards from completion so hopefully this streak will continue.
I spoke to Mike Baker if you want to call me at the office.
Arny,
Its nice to hear from you--I see you are doing several sets as well.
Brian Dwyer, a sophmore at Seton Hall and a great guy(obc-spacktrack on ebay) does virtually all the buying on ebay for me, periodically checks dealer sites on the internet and tries to broker deals with others. He is enormously helpful and he does it because he loves the hobby. I receive a lot of inquiries every day to buy, sell and trade cards and do deals sometimes with Brian's assistance/sometimes not. Brian also does all my selling on ebay.
Good luck on your sets.
Jim
Congrats on another nice set. Would you email me or PM when you get a moment? Thanks.
Stay classy,
Rom

The volume and quality of your sets is out of reach for us mere mortals. The overall sportscard collecting experience and knowledge you must have, makes me very inquisitive. I could ask about 50 different things, but would sincerely enjoy your views on a couple items.
Which "Superstar" card from the early 50s was the most difficult to find in PSA 8 grade ? Unlike many commons, the really big stars always had a decent amount sent in for grading, who was the hardest to find ?
Perhaps many already know, but why Vic Davalillo the player featured in your nickname ? It would seem a derivitave of someone like Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Ted Williams, etc., would be more in line with your collections ?
Send me your e-mail and I will be glad to contact you.
Jaxxr,
That is very kind of you to say. I have picked up a lot over the past 20 years doing this and have a much different perspective on the hobby than probably most do on this board.
What superstar is toughest in psa 8 grade--I would say the 1952 Topps Eddie Matthews.
Why Vic--he was my favorite player growing up--I liked the way he played and I liked the sound of his name.
Thanks for asking.
Jim
Thanks,
Ron
