New Barber Quarter Addition: 1909-O

MFHMFH Posts: 11,720 ✭✭✭✭
I have been looking for a better example of a 1909-O quarter for quite some time.

Pleased to say that this is my latest addition.

Update: 9/18/06:
This is another addition to my set, and its the same coin as listed below, however, the lighting is wrong in both images. The coin has a lovely champagne gold tint to it. imageimage

I haven't looked at the links yet but just wanted to quickly tell you that you have just bought the great unsung key to this set for those who do not know the set well. Nice work!

PS: You wouldn't have a G-EF, preferably F or better, for me, would you?

Tom: my duplicate is really an AU58...but its in an ANACS UNC details, Net AU 50 - cleaned - holder. Super looking coin, really. Nice golden toning with darker rims. I can't see any cleaning lines, maybe the coin was "wiped".

    BlindedbyEgo,

Very nice 09-O. I also saw your thread on the other Barber purchases. Nice score.

Your 09-O is in what appears to be a second generation PCGS holder and from the close up of this coin, looks like it should upgrade from a 63 to a 64. Good luck.

This coin is without a doubt one of the unheralded coins in the set as far as rarity is concerned. Most Barber collectors know its a difficult coin to locate but few realize exactly how rare it is to locate in Ch AU thru MS.

Nice score, Mike! Wow, after a pickup like that, aren't you ready for a nice, long vacation? No internet, no phone, no ebaY, just a good ol' relaxing time to celebrate getting that 09o!! image

Great find Mike. One of those difficult dates to find in the quarter series that the casual collector may not know about. I rarely see this date for sale except in Ag-VG.

  • Great pickup Mike...........truly one of the tougher date's in the Barber quarter series in VF thru MS grades. I have a feeling that the 09-O will eventually become the last date I need to complete my Barber quarter set.

I'm sure that after the BCCS is finished with their new rarity rating survey for this date, that the rarity rating will change from the current R4, for coins in the F/VF grade range, to at least a R5 rarity rating. The BCCS currently lists the rarity rating for the 09-O, in grades XF/AU, as R4. This should probably get bumped up to a R6 rarity rating, probably a R7, if only the AU grade were considered.

I came across a 1909 on super bowl sunday as well,...a guest who came over brought a bankers bag of coins, and asked me to look them over for him....4 worthy coins IMO...one was a 1909 barber qtr that is XF45 at worst!...it was a nice surprise........ I put a dozen or so coins in Flips for him, and rolled all his silver by type......we'll be discussing the barber qtr further

    Cool Mike!

In all the shows I've gone to, I've only seen five certified (ANACS, PCGS, or NGC) VF or XF 1909-0's.

Oddly, I saw two at one time at a Long Beach show, in the same dealer's case. Go figure.

Unfortunately, all the ones I have seen were moderately cleaned .... yes, even the ones in PCGS plastic image

All had that fresh, blooming "just minted" look collectors like Tyler demand! Nice, bright and shiny!

One tough, tough, tough O-mint, problem or not, above VG.

    Mike,

Break that 09-o out of the holder and throw it in your pocket and carry it a week or two and it will be worth a lot more????

I received the 09-O quarter this afternoon. The coin is a strict MS63 as there are a few minisule marks on the portrait and there is a slight depression at Liberty's upper lip, ( which the auction lot description mentioned as mint made ). The reverse has a clashed die, as you can see the faint outline of Liberty under the eagle.

Star # 3's centrals are not as sharply defined as the rest of the stars. All other devices are very sharply struck.
The surfaces are blast white ( more than likely this coin was sent to NCS before it was holdered at NGC ) and the luster is quite good.

One of these days I have enough coins to send in to PCGS for cross over.

JimD: No, I'm NOT going to use this coin as a pocket piece...what I should do is put the coin in a Dansco album for a few years to develop rim toning.

Overall, I'm quite pleased with the coin.

Thanks everyone for the previous comments.

Another winner Mike. The semi-keys in the quarter series are definitely overlooked and underappreciated. The 1909-O in AU has to the most unknown conditional scarcity in all of numismatics. We are talking about a twentieth century coin with substantial mintage numbers that does not exist in AU and can never be found in XF. The only way to do an AU set in the quarters is to buy the 09-O in MS and put it in one's pocket for a month to wear it down to AU.

Hey...I already commented on this thread. imageimage
  • I see this is an old thread and will have to get the lowdown from Mike on what's going on here.

The 09-O Barber quarter is one of my favorite dates and a coin that I've been eagerly searching for, for quite some time now. My grade range is open for anything nice and original, VF thru AU, and I still can't find a decent example after a couple of years of searching.

When I was hunting MS Barbers from 1975-1985 the 1909-0 was underrated, but not as much as many of the earlier "O" and "S" mints. It could have been the era. But back then these were around. I still feel there are more than enough of these around in MS62-MS65 grades for those that need them.

What I never realized before coming to the Forum was how tough many of these are in circ condition. It does not surprise me that placing a MS 1909-0 in your pocket may be the only reasonable way to own an AU specimen! After the crash of the 1990 market it was not that ususual to see semi-key dates like the 09-0 bring little to no premium to type during a weak market. I recall one of my dealer friends buying a MS64 for type during that period.

Hey Mike, the guy who has the 01-s Half in 55, also has another 09-o In 53?

You remember the 09-o I sold about a year ago that was a dipped AU in a PCGS Xf holder, that was his as well. If this guy would ever start letting loose of some of his tucked away material. it would do very well????
