1971-S Jefferson PCGS PR69 DCAM

I am in need of this coin for my registry set. There is one listed on Ebay and wondered if this is a high price for the coin or the normal rate. Pop top 35. Any thoughts.
Thanks

  • This isnt really the best way to figure out prices, but on Teletrade, over the last year 2 have sold. One was $425, and the other was $775.

At Heritage, on September 24, 2005 one sold for 546.00

there are probably better ways of finding a good average price for PCGS stuff, but maybe those prices will help you out and get you started.

A touch on the high side, but not way out there.

The coin on the other hand looks like it has some problems...can't see the reverse so that is also scary. The obverse has some light blue patina growing on it from the pics, so I would pass. Chances are this is growing since it was holder, since PCGS would not likely holder a 1971s coin in 69 with this "problem."

  • Thanks for the reply MNCoin. I passed on the coin, she sent me more pictures and there is some streaking patina on the coin. The reverse looks pretty clean, not a true deep cam though.

I just want to say that this date is a very tough proof to locate where both sides are fully frosted with deep mirrors! Using the pic of your 1971 no S proof, and I'm not saying your pictured coin has only a partially frosted Monticello but this is the major problem with the 1971-S proofs! And I fully respect your stance on not buying the holder and your hunt for the ultimate quality proof. You may have already and I wouldn't be surprised that this 69dcam won't be the last you'll pass on before settling on the right coin.

the 1971-S was about a pop 4 in PR69DCAM until about a year or two ago, then the pop jumped almost overnight as it did with many of the early 70's dates. this leads me to believe that either a few collectors/dealers came across or had hoarded quite a large number of quality sets or the grading for these dates came in line with those before and after 1971. as others have said, this is a date that often comes with one-sided DCAM(usually the obverse) or two-sided Cameo that's either weak or uneven. same thing with 1972.

in the end it's a tough date to find in true DCAM of any grade and PR69DCAM is doubly difficult. if you must buy sight unseen don't hesitate to use the return option. a price in the area of $600-$800 seems right for a properly graded coin. BTW, i don't have one in my set yet, either.
