39 Down--1951 Topps Red Back Completed in PSA 8 or Better

Topps's first set along with the Blue Backs(which are significantly harder--I still need 5 upgrades). While this is not known as a highly difficult set in psa 8 or better, the last cards were very challenging--Mel Parnell and Eddie Stanky. They appeared on Triple sSs one day and boom I was done. Stanky is the toughest card in the set--a pop 7 in psa 8 with 9 higher.

I first bought this set raw from Alan Rosen about 10 years ago raw who advertised it as mint. Unfortunately only one card came back as a psa 9 and my set was all over the map with psa 4s to 1 psa 9. Major upgrades were needed. My set is complete with 47 psa 8s and 5 psa 9s and currently ranks 8th on the psa set registry. I do not plan on upgrading it from here.
I hope to have other sets to announce very soon. My goal of 50 vintage sets complete in psa 8 or better by year-end is looking very achievable. The ultimate goalis over 100.

    Jim,

just enjoying your collection must be a full time job!image

Have you ever put any thought into a crappy late 70's or early 80's set? I know the modern tag but some very cool sets.... 77 & 78 Topps, 84 Donruss, etc

    The Splendid Splinter,

Burn Baby Burn--and good luck on those 67s.

    Softparade,

I have all sets all sports 1969-91 nrmt-mt or better ungraded.

    Two considerations for submitting.

1)Doing one of the 600-plus card sets is exhausting and I have over 100 sets I am currently working on.

2)Does it make sense economically? I have given thought to submitting 1969 or 1971 Topps but not late 70s and certainly not 1984.

And I due love the collection as anyone who has been over my house will tell you.

  • Jim, Congrats once again. I'd love to one day see the collection it is awesome. but California is a long ways from where you are. I'm hoping for a trip to New York and a ballgame at Yankee Stadium in the next year or two. again keep up the great work. Phil

    Phil,

If you come to NY please call.

I get out to Cali every 6-9 months and I usually take a group of collectors/dealers/graders out to dinner in Los Angeles. If you live near L.A. let me know and you can join us next time.

  • Jim,

Thanks i'll remember that if/when i get a chance to go to New York. you're collection may be just as interesting as Cooperstown. L.A. is about a 5-6 hour drive from where i'm at. take care and good luck on you're set pursuits. Phil

    Oh, cool, Jim!

I'm not looking to hit you up for a free meal, but when you're in CA (Los Angeles) next, I'd love to tag along at your collectors' dinner! I'll pay my own way...and you can use the money to purchase another "8" for your collection!

(Maybe PSA can attribute that card to me with a line on the flip...)

Congratulations...again! With 11 more of them on the way in 2006!

    NickM,

Any dinner I am at there is my treat. With David Vargha moving to Texas there will now be two extra seats at the table.

Also there will be many get-togethers around the national, I'm sure.
