Pope Pius IX Medal

Here is an ebay auction for the Pope Pius medal that's been shown here a couple times...Linkage. Looks like this one may have a bit of rim damage, but I haven't seen one of these on ebay in a couple years--and I do look for it.

Click on the image for a bigger image. Rim damage is very noticable. That being said, I really love the reverse of the medal.

Even with the considerable rim damage, it's something that I'm watching. I've also been on the lookout for one. That reverse design is simply wonderful, and the dings don't interfere with it.

I hadn't clicked on the picture...you're right those are pretty noticeable! This is the first one I've seen on flea bay for a year, and I do look for it fairly regularly ('Pope Pius' is one of my regular searches, along with 'baby' and about 10 other ones image).

There are at least 2 varieties in this big (~82mm) series of medals that I've run across. The one on ebay seems to be a Mazio 731. These often have rim bumps and its a real pain to find something to put them in for storage. A silver version was sold in one of the Triton auctions several years ago and eventually found its way to me.

Here's another variety that I had at home:

The obv is a bit different in that it is dated year 29. My medal is a bit darker than the other but has just as much detail and a couple of rim dings as well. What a great series!

That is the most I have ever heard about this medal. Where could I found out and read more?

Solid, who posts on the liteside, makes custom holders and I know he has put one of the type on ebay into a display--I'll look for the picture.

BTW I love the reverse of the one you have pictured too--I hadn't seen that one yet.

edited to add pix....it's a vertical-axis rotating display, rim bumps would be somewhat concealed I think.

Cathy - the reverse on that one you are looking at is really cool - but at that price I don't think I would like it with those rim dings.
That is a relly nice medal design!!!!!

That's always a challenge and I don't have much of an answer. Mazio is just really a catalogue and I really normally use the picture supplement sold by Jencius, Berman, etc. "Roma Resurgens" is a great book that you see occassionally, but cuts off in the early 1700s. There's the Renaldi book and a few other titles of specific popes but they're in Italian an generally focus only on the annual medals not on the special ones like these. Auction catelogues are great sorts from time to time, but can be rather hit or miss.

I like the holder you displayed, but it sure takes up a lot of room. Any idea of someone who does mylar holders of this size? Most of my collection is in the 2.5" mylars from safeflip (economizes room at the bank) but the jumbos tend to end up in boxes or small paper envelopes which have problems long term.
