So I gambled on a dot-sized auction pic. What is it?

Another wonderful Ebay dot claiming to be a picture, but it looks like it has potential (I *never* see countermarked issues in high grade). Cost me $16. Unfortunately I can't find it in Krause. image

Auction title is "BRAZIL 1822-R COUNTERSTAMP 20 REIS NEAR MINT!!"

Only problem is that Krause does not list any 19th-century coins as hosts for this countermark type, only 18th-century. Whatever it is, the host looks like it may be XF/AU.

Could be a gem... could be a POS.

Ideas?

Could be a counterfeit. There are lots of counterfeit countermarks out there.

Edited to add: Without looking at my Krause to confirm, I'm highly doubtful of its authenticity. Brazil became independent in 1822. They wouldn't have kept using the colonial countermarks on coins after that.

I thought that might be a possibility. image Not too worried though, as this is a seller I regularly do business with...

I wish you luck with that one!

The seller is the same one that sold me 4 counterfeit British crowns. Of course he did not list them as counterfeit. He sold quite a number of those 4 "coin" sets to unsuspecting buyers.

Were you able to return them? How was the communication? I've returned merchandise to Toby in the past because I thought coins were misdescribed, overgraded, etc. Never a problem...

Never tried to return them. I know that several members here collect counterfeit coins for educational purposes so I sent them out free of charge.
