What To Do With My Marino Card Collection

Hey Everyone,

I would like your opinions on what to do with my Marino collection. I have about 700 different Marino cards, they range from $.50 to $350. The problem that I am running into is that I am a huge Dolphin fan and Marino fan. I went to his HOF induction and his retirement game in Miami. But I am really into collecting vintage football 72, 71, 69 & 62 and could use the money from the sale of the Marino collection to go toward those set registry sets. But, I bought most of the Marino cards when he was hot and even though I never paid over half book at the time I still have way over full book in them now and can not expect to get even 75% of book on most. If I hold onto the Marinos there is no evidence that they will increase in value, they sure haven't since his induction. So here I set with $10,000 in Marino cards that I could probably sell for $4,000 to $4,500 if I really hold out for the highest value. If I set on them I can't see them gaining much but I care about the player. Anyway, I think you can see my dilema. At least the vintage is not that volitile. If anyone has been in this situation please let me know what you did and if you regret it.

I could use some imput as I go back and forth almost daily.

Thanks Jack image

Open an Ebay store, 2 cents for listing and $15.00 for the month. It will cost you $29.00 to list all 700?

Jack, you obviously like Marino so just keep them. You collected them because of a like for the player not planning on selling them in the future, right? If so just keep them. I am sure you can come up with some $$ selling something else or just saving some.
    Just my opinion

The way I see it, you have to accept financial losses in any type of collectible. It's just the nature of the game. It's easy to overpay (at least in hindsight) when we collect something because we tend to get a little too emotional about the item(s). Nonetheless, whenever I sell a card (even at a loss) I like to use the money for another card (which may very well increase in value down the line thus offsetting your original losses). A few purchases of something you like with the proceeds (in your case vintage football) will lessen the blow. Trust me. For years I bought everything I could of Steve Yzerman. Now I find myself selling a lot of those items- at losses. Collecting interests change. And I prefer quality to quantity.

There are a lot of PSA Marino collectors out there. You should research the low pop issues and grade them. Many PSA 10s sell in the $25 - $50 range ... rare inserts can go for much more.
  • Researd ebay to see what type of money you might actually get back. Taking a $5,000 loss is tough to do. The hobby seems to consume a lot of us often, but you need to think it over before taking such a big loss.
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!
  • Guys,

Thanks for the input. I think I will use my 6 free grades to send in my teal and white 96 upper deck game jerseys, a couple autographs and and couple 1 of 50 cards that I have and see what they get graded as. Then I will make my decision. I already have an ebay store and will probably put them on there if they grade high enough. Thanks again. Jack

I would keep them. I think you would be very sad to sell them... or at least if I were you I would be sad to sell such a great collection.
