Need advice on this German proof...

The coin below didn't meet reserve last time out; I'm negotiating with the seller. It looks like there may be some colorful toning not revealed in the pics. I have noticed the fingerprint to the right of the bust. While I have a few various German States 2 Mark and 3 Mark proofs, I don't have any 5 Mark proofs.

2,500 pieces originally minted.

Relative to Krause ($500), how high is it safe to go and still get a decent deal? 75%? 100%? 150%? 200%? More?

What do these go for at auction?

I wish the reverse pic was larger...

Thanks in advance.

Seller needs to clean the holder, there seems to be a FP on the obverse ,but it looks as if it's on the slab, not the coin.

Which BTW is very nice, but I can't answer your questions, I'm sure someone else will.

You seem to like coins with royal couples on the obverse. image

By gosh, I think the birthday boy is correct. It looks like the print is on the slab because it goes past the coin.

That looks like a PCGS holder that is at least 8-10 years old. I doubt that it is even remotely possible to even entertain an offer for less than Krause. Start at 100% to show you are serious... that is... if you are serious.

If I were to collect German coins again, I would offer $500. What was the high bid?

Doh! I hadn't even noticed that the fingerprint extended past the coin... makes the coin more attractive... hmm...

Ajaan: Very little activity on the coin. Bidding topped out at $220 or so; I'm sure nowhere near reserve...

    Coinpictures:

NEN has a NGC PR66 Cam on their site for $795 if this gives you any idea. 3Mark

Yeah, I'd been eyeing that one at NEN for a while. Gorgeous white and black cameo, just a bit too much gelt for me.

100% of Krause is probably about right for that coin.
Reserve auctions scare many bidders away (myself included) so the high bid is unlikely to be an accurate pricing point.

NEN shows theirs as being negotiable. If you prefer the black & white cameo why not make an offer or ask fo rthe best price? For 20% either way get the coin you really want.

Well, as it turns out, NEN would have to come down a BOATLOAD to make it similar. I finished up negotiations and ended up getting this one for about half of NEN's ask on theirs. $400 shipped, which is 80% of Krause. All things considered, I think I got a decent deal... depending on how colorful that toning is in hand, I may have gotten a great deal. image

P.S. Thanks for the pricing help!

I think at 80% Krause for a PCGS 65 (old Green Holder),,

    YOU GOT AN AWESOME DEAL.

I bought a Swiss Confederation (1941) piece last weekend for 110% Krause (65 PCGS Old Holder)

    Dan,

Nice pickup...coin looks to have some attractive color to it IMO, and seems quite clean. I probably would have bought it at that price with no hesitation.

I just bought that Baden 5 Mark Proof that you had a link to recently (the toner NEN had). Can't wait to pick it up at Long Beach. Thanks for the tip. image
