Small ebay problem...would appreciate your thoughts

On december 4th I sell a 1975 mini. As many mini collectors know, some cards were cut short. This was one of those cards. I stated such in the auction and even gave the exact measurements of the card in my description. Positive feedback was traded once the buyer received the card. No problems, right? WRONG
I get an email TODAY stating that the guy wants a refund because he feels the card is trimmed. I told him no refund because all information about this card had been disclosed....including exact measurements. The card (#1 Aaron) was sold as a "buy it now" for a fraction of BV.
So, am I being an a$$hole not giving the guy a refund or am I ok thinking that all pertanent information about the card was disclosed and no refund was in order?
Your thoughts?

You were upfront and honest by disclosing all the info on the card. So you did your part. He had a chance to read everything before clicking his mouse so, No refund.

It definitely sounds like you are in the right; but is the headache worth the couple of bucks (fraction) you sold it for? Let your stress level be your guide, whichever solution gives you more inner peace is the way to go on a small ticket item like this (particularly with no feedback risk).

Some would say stick to your principles, but 100% customer satisfaction (even when you know you are right) is a sound principle too - whichever you choose you will be in the right, as you know you were forthright from the beginning - so do whichever will make you feel better.

  • Its been almost 2 months! If it was a week after the auction ended, I would consider it. Seems like he got it back from PSA as "Does not meet size requirement", and decided it wasnt a bargain anymore. If you arent afraid of taking a hit, stand pat on this one

    Hi...

If your description was clear as you say then I would not refund.

That was some sound advice! Sometimes one has to pick their battles and not deal with too much stress over inconsequential issues.

  • I had a similar event once, selling "raw" material. I knew my product very well because it was my collection I was selling. It hurt to sell it but we needed money to buy a second car. The guy sent me back a card that I never sold him. I sent him a "7" or "8" 1964 Colaviato and he tried to return a "5" Colavito, O/C.

Thanks guys. My concious is definately more clear. I dont feel bad at all after this much time. The thing with raw is that you never know if they are trying to return another card also. I actually found stickers that I now put on my toploaders that leave "void" when the sticker is removed.

I would guess that this guy would be wanting to return the original but he had full and honest description of the card.
  • He already left positive feedback so he has no case. Just block him from bidding on any more of your auctions.
  • If he wants to return it because the condition was not as advertised then I would refund him. However, in this case, you indicated that you gave bidders sort of a "warning" in that the card measured short, so I agree with no refund (unless you just want to).

I have several cards that I bought in the early 90s (back when I first started collecting and didn't know any better) that I feel sure are trimmed. Two of them are 56 Clemente and Mays, NMMT+. I have thought about how I would describe them if I ever list them on ebay. Maybe something like this: "this card measures slightly short side-to-side... close examination of the edges reveals that the right edge is much cleaner and smoother than the others... so I would say there is a good possibility that this card has been trimmed".
