What is the most universally recognized card from the 60's?

As I was talking shop with a fellow board member the other day, the 1964 Topps AL Bombers card came up, and I thought about it for a bit until concluding in my opinion that it is probably one of the most universally recognized cards issued during the entire 1960's. 2 HOF players with strong appeal, flanked by home run record holder Maris and a somewhat well known Cash who had tore up the AL in 1961. Plus, the card was in the lower numbering run, so it was well distributed, and those cards had nice eye-appeal.

I thought about other cards that would also likely be on such a list... 1962 Managers Dream, 1968 Super Stars, 1963 Pride of the NL... but couldn't really think of others that would fall into the same catagory - a card that basically could be easily recognized by a non-collector who may have busted a few packs in the 60's.

What is your choice for the most universally recognized card printed during the 1960's and why?

Got to go with the Ryan. Pete Rose a close second, out of the first mentioned cards I have to say the 62 Managers Dream.

I would say it would be either the Rose or the Seaver Rookies.

Jerry Koosman and some skinny looking Ryan guy.

Would someone who was a casual collector in the 1960's really identify with a Pete Rose rookie or a Ryan rookie more-so than a card with multiple stars? In the small world of collectors, of course we all recognize the Rose and Ryan cards as being two of the most significant, but are they really the most universally recognized?

A card like Managers Dream has arguably the biggest name players from both leagues on it... one of only a few cards that feature an AL and a NL player. It is for that reason that I figure it has a more universal recognition. Plus, it was a first series card, making it plentiful in quantity at the time of issue.

I'd vote for the 1967 Topps Tom Seaver Rookie...IMHO still the best post-war pitcher.

Recognizing players is different from recognizing a card. The question you asked was what was the most recognized card. Sure, cram as many HOF'ers onto one card, you're bound to recognized who they are, but do you really remember the card itself? I bet most collectors of ANY era would not remember multiplayer cards as well as they would individual cards of their favorite players. Also, you are proposing this question to members of this forum, not casual collectors from the 60's who wouldn't be frequenting here to begin with.

I think the Rose for two reasons. One, it is a very striking, very colorful, very recognizable card. You could see that card from 50 paces away and recognize it. Second, it was one of the first cards to gain widespread attention (unfortunately) because of counterfeits.

Hmm. The 1962 Roger Marris has to be up there. They had a copy of it on an epesode of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Some alien collector kidnapped Data and added him to a collection of unique objects from throughout the universe. One of his items was a 1962 Marris.

Great question. Of course there are a number of terrific cards from the 1960s, some of which already mentioned here. I don't think any particular one though I'd say is "universally recognized" or particularly stands out such as a 52 Mantle - that's not a put down at all...there were just so many nice cards from that decade.

You didn't specify baseball in the question so if I had to pick "the most universally recognized card" from that decade it would be a non-baseball card...it would be the Topps Namath rookie.

How about 69 Mantle, was his last card and there was the variation of this card??

    Ryan Rookie...hands down..not a contest.

    Loves me some shiny!
  • To me, even though I am not a Yankee fan, (my family killed all Yankee supporter newborns in the delivery room) the 60's and Topps is defined by Mickey Mantle. He had a card EVERY year of the 60's. My pick would be the 1960 version #350.
  • BuccaneerBuccaneer Posts: 1,794 ✭✭
In hindsight (where we are today), it would have to be the Ryan and Rose cards.

Back then (when no one cared about rookie cards, for good reasons), it would have to be any Mantle cards.

Here are a few important ones in my opinion, in no particular order
    Ryan-rookie
    Rose-rookie
    Seaver-rookie
    Reggie Jackson-rookie
    Carew-rookie
    Yaz-rookie
62 Maris- The year after 61, The first card to show his 61 hr's
62 Mantle- one of his better looking cards and highly sought after probably more than any other 60's Mantle
69 Mantle white letter variation- also the last card of the Mick
Are there anymore Im leaving out ?

More as a vote than anything else, I just add that Rose came to mind first without reading the above. I then read and saw people threw in Ryan. I would say it's close but to me, that hysteria in the late 70's/early 80's over the Rose rookie was pretty HUGE. I still vote for Rose even after reading the above. I think it likely depends on when you were big into collecting. I think the Ryan was bigger in the later 80's when I was in college, concentrating on beer, etc... and not baseball cards.

  • adding to the ryan vote. I remember as kid dreaming to have that card. Beckett always had it's picture in the price guide section of the 68's. It's an ugly looking card (nasty borders), but it's a ryan!

Cool thread! I agree with the majority of responses that the Ryan and Rose RC's are the most recognizable, as well as most any '60s Mantle. But how about the other '60s superstars? As far as collectors are concerned, I'd suggest the following four cards as occupying the second tier beneath those already mentioned:

I'm going with the '62 Maris, as well, but for different reasons.

Suppose you collected cards in the 60's. Name ONE card that you would actually have anticipated getting?

After Maris' '61 season, I would have yearned to see his 61 HR total on the back of his '62 Topps card.

I say tie between Ryan and Rose. Up until the late 80's Rose had a major advantage. If he weren't engulfed in scandal, and if he were in the HOF, I'd put Rose over Ryan. Number 3 might be Reggie's rookie. It always fetches crazy prices in 9's.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

Actually, I was thinking about the '62 Maris also, but I didn't want to sound too much like a geek for having attribute that to a Star Trek episode. image

In the order that I thought of them after seeing the question:

    1) '62 Maris.

    2) Ryan rookie

    3) Rose rookie.

Totally agree with that comment but also believe the Ryan card is hands down the winner.

Late 60's and early to mid 70's non-sports
  • In terms of being universally recognized, I'd say the '65 Topps Joe Namath rookie.

It's the kind of card you'd see on the homepage of Ebay for example under sports collectibles. The Ryan and Rose images are extremely well known, but I don't think they are as iconic.

Honorable mentions....'65 Mantle, '69 Johnny Bench, '61 Maris, '67 Seaver.
