Thinking about doing my first vintage set, could use some input

I have about 100 cards from 1973 Topps baseball from when I was little. I have most of the higher value cards; Ryan, Clemente, Jackson, Palmer and Rose. Is this set going to cost me a fortune to try and put together? Not interested in grading so condition is not that big of a deal for me. I don't follow grades that much, but from what I've seen, if i could do the set in the equivalent of a 6-7 I would be happy. Any input from you experienced guys?

I would consider asking this on the Registry Forum.

There's a load of guys there who do sets and don't post here.

The 1973 set is a fun set to do, and of some significance as it contains the Schmidt RC and the last "official" cards of Mays and Clemente, plus a Ruth and was the last set issued in series.

Sometimes, on a set like this though, you can spend a lot more than necessary to build an ex/mt+ type set. While buying a whole set is not as much fun, a complete set in that type of grade should be $350 - $450 on ebay; to pick up the remaining cards (first in big lots, then progressively smaller lots, and singles will add up - particularly the postage - or paying full book prices at a card shop and you may spend 20 or 30% higher).

But, even if it ends up costing you an extra hundred or so, you'll get hours of pleasure from the project - a small price to pay if you aren't in it for profit. Go for it.

Edit: Here's an example of a nice set in that bracket: ebay link
