Some highlights (and a few disappointments) from my January submission (w/scans)

Submitted 25 cards on the January Collector's Special ($13/5 day). Overall, I'm pleased since the submission averaged out at a grade of 6.84 and I shoot for 7s or better for the cards I submit. However, there was quite a big spread around the mean -- 8 cards graded lower and 6 cards graded higher than NM. But there weren't just 6s and 8s on either side of the 7s. Here are some of the cards...

First the disappointments:

Thought this was a solid card, maybe the rough cut was just too rough...

image

This is the only card from my childhood collection that I thought was in good enough shape to grade, guess I was wrong...

image

Thought these two were solid 7s, even thought the Sluggers had a shot at 8...

image

image

I had this one pegged as an 8, guess I missed a surface wrinkle (still can't see one...)

image

Now some of the sevens:

Bought this raw on eBay, 8/12/2002

image

Received this as a birthday gift (purchased raw from my favorite shop, 10/25/2003)

image

Just bought this raw from my favorite shop over the holidays (12/27/2005). I've seen quite a few 8s that aren't as nice (a few touches on the orange back corners kept this from NM-MT).

Now the highlights:

Bought raw from my favorite shop, 5/13/2004

image

Bought raw from my favorite shop, 8/14/2004 (love the color on this card)

Bought raw from my favorite shop, 12/23/2003

Just bought this raw from my favorite shop over the holidays, 12/27/2005. Pleasantly surprised this one came back an 8, figured it for a 7.

Bought raw from my favorite shop, 12/27/2003. Great centering and bold color...

And the best surprise of all, my 3rd 9 of the ~100 1955-1975 Topps HOFers I've submitted. Just bought this raw from my favorite shop over the holidays, 12/27/2005

Here's the entire submission:

What can I say but WOW!

And some of them I don't understand - they look way better than the grade you got!

    thanx for sharing

I believe a thread from a couple weeks back mentioned cards graded with the dreaded 314xxxxxx number assigned to it. Seems these always come back much lower than expected. My last submission experienced the same thing. I didn't post the results here because i was embarrased, ashamed, and deeply depressed... oh the agony!

    Great Bench though!!

Amazing looking cards... the grader was pretty hard on you on a few of them... that Sutton rookie looks spectacular, as do the 55's. Congrats on the Bench

I would bet there wrinkles on the 2 56's , that is the only explanation as to why those would be 5's. if you are selling any of the cards please pm or email me, harvey0724@hotmail.com thanks

Thanks for all of the kind words, guys. I'm not planning to sell any of these but when/if I do I will post my intentions on the PSA boards.

One more card to show off: just won this one on the Bay, bottom corners are showing white but I love the color & register and the centering is dead-on.

paleo....always love it when you post scans of your cards AND tell us how you got them. When you bought these cards raw...were they bought at SMR prices for the grades they respectively received? thanks

Major -- When I buy raw from my favorite shop, he charges me 85-100% of Beckett Hi-Book which approximates SMR PSA 7. So if my submitted cards come back 5 or 6, I've lost value, if they come back 7 I'm breaking even and if they come back 8 or 9 then I've added value to my collection.

One of my biggest pet-peeves is the dealer who charges PSA 8 prices for high-grade raw cards (I've run across a number of these, especially at the last two Nationals I've attended). These guys expect you to absorb all of the cost and the risk -- if I'm going to spend PSA 8 prices, I'll buy the cards already slabbed.
