1895 Mayo Cut Plug N300 card - PSA 5 OC - thoughts?

Hi guys,

Quick story, then looking for opinions.....

I was able to obtain 4 of the ultra-scarce N300 1895 Mayo Cut Plug cards a month or so ago. A co-worker was having construction done on his house, and when they knocked down a wall, they found a bunch of cards. When he was telling me this, I thought it was the mother load. Unfortunately, there were about 20 cards in total - most of birds, some random actress cards, and these 4. Almost everything was in terrible condition, except for one of the Mayos (common card - Shindle). The guy asked me if I'd give him $50 for the stuff, so of course I did! (I said he was a co-worker, not a great friend!)

I sent all 4 in to PSA to be graded, and got 3 PSA 1's and the better card got a PSA 5 OC. (I just got the grades posted last night; I'll show a scan when I get them back.) I honestly expected a 6, and wasn't so sure about the OC part of it, but I can deal with it. (I didn't even know you could get an OC on a 5.) This is only the second copy of this card to be graded by PSA, with the other getting either a 3 or 4, so it may be the best version of this card out there (depending on how the OC is viewed).

Now, my question - what should I expect to get for this card? I really am more of a collector and not a dealer, but I know these go for pretty big bucks. They're not included in the SMR though, and I haven't really seen any sales of a card in this situation.

If anyone is familar with similar sales, let me know what you think. I'd rather keep the card, but seeing how I'm in the process of closing on a house near Boston, my financial situation could use all the help it can get! Thanks!

It all depends. I would expect $700 or so for the PSA5 o/c, but it can vary a lot depending on the player and the market participants. These cards just do not come up that much anymore - and the pricing can be all over the place. Unfortunately I cannot be more definitive than that - others may have better ideas, but you should be able to score well over $1,000 for the lot of them if you place each individually on Ebay. Scans would help, too....

I would email the owner of this registry set. I am betting he knows a few things or two about the set, since it appears he owns many of the PSA graded Mayos.

Depending on eye appeal and who the players are you are going to feel very guilty about only giving the guy $50. image

Thanks for the help guys! I appreciate the feedback!

And yes, I'll feel VERY guilty about only paying $50 for these.... all the way to the bank!

If only he can now knock down another wall of the house and find a Woolworth store perfectly preserved from 1952, then I could pay him $100 for all of those cards!

That doesn't seem to be that off-center for a PSA 5 grade. Argh.

Yeah, tell me about it on the OC. I figured they might be nicer, seeing how rare these are. I just checked the Pop report - this is only the 2nd of this card they've graded, and of the entire set, PSA has only graded 124 of these cards, 85 of which are graded between 1 and 4.

For comparison, PSA has graded over 52,000 T 206 cards. Suffice to say these are pretty scarce. So I am quite happy about my mini-find of 4 of them!

I guess, upon reflection, the card is probably worse than 85/15, which is the cut-off. I was a bit fooled before by the shadow. All that being said - Mayo collectors are not necessarily so inclined to pay huge premiums for a numerical grade. The cards are pretty darn rare - they go for hundreds in nice condition - and I think the price ranges for cards like Mayos fit more into the 'old-school paradigm', of Poor, Good, Very Good, Excellent, Near Mint. There are just so few of them - that there is not going to be a discernible difference in prices realized for a VG and a VG+ and a VG/EX.....
