Liberia 1 cent

Not sure why, but I really like these, even though they look like early US copper. Maybe that why?? imageimage

I sorta don't care for the uneven colors on that one and would probably try to retone it more evenly with some sulfur and Vaseline, but yes- I have always liked those. I'm in the market for them, too, since one of my Darkside customers (the Butler manager at the hotel here) is an avid collector, and he is Liberian. He's savvy enough that he doesn't touch NCLT, either. (I sold that pineapple penny I got from you to him, BTW).

  • Is that the "darkener" that has been discussed before Rob??

Yes, Terry- I still have a little Sutton's Darkener left that Ye Olde Dead King mixed up for me. Really there's nothing to it but Vaseline and powdered sulfur. Trouble is, I have no idea where to find powdered sulfur, so when this batch runs out I'll be asking Michael where he found it. Don't they use it in gardening, like for growing roses? Heaven knows there's enough sulfur in our water. I could probably run cold tap water straight out of our well and plunk a coin in it for a few days to darken it. I might try that. Get some Sutton's Mix (or the recipe thereof) from Dead King and doctor that sucker. Aside from the weird colors it is an attractive piece.

Spoon- NOW you're talkin'! If you ever wanna part with that li'l darlin', lemme know.

One thing I have always liked about the 1847 pieces like Terry's is that Boulton-style incuse lettering around the edges, reminiscent of Brit Cartwheel coppers.

That's the seller's pic still... I'm racking up quite an order with him so haven't received this one yet. But his images are always true to life in my experience.

OK, no fair! I don't have any Liberia except a modern NCLT!

Who's gonna sell me one of them incuse-lettering pieces, hmm? image

Look at this 1890 Liberian two cent pattern! It interesting to see the US two cent design in another context.
