Something doesn't look right about it. The heavy ripples in the field and over parts of the design look too exaggerated to be the radial flow lines one associates with a late die state. Someone may have altered the coin and subsequent wear may have muted the damage. I could be wrong, of course.

Excessive wire brush polishing followed by long term carrying as a pocketpiece. The rippling and the doupling or even tripling seen on some of the legends it commonly caused by being wirebrushed by a rotary wheel. This would also weaken many of the details. Then being carried in a pocket caused additioal wear and removed many of the taletell scratches and lines left from the brushing.
I've heard of the wire brush explanation, but none of these rippled coins show any scratches. I've seen a lot of rippled Lincolns, and none show scratches, even under magnification. I think someone concocted the wire brush scenrio out of thin air, and the myth spread. I suspect some other technique is being used to alter these coins.

At first glance it almost looks like a worn coin that was retooled, but I realize that's not the case.
