Whats your opinion on "User ID Kept Private"

I was looking at some 2000 sp Jake Delhomme rc's (graded) on ebay. I did an advanced search to see what they have been selling for as of late. The psa 10's were between $76.00 and $206.00. I saw one bgs 9.5, not even all gem subgrades go for $510.00. Now, I took all the pre-playoff game(alot of these ended before the game) hype into consideration but still cant imagine it selling for this much over a psa 10 version. I then looked at the bidder list and it was "User ID Kept Private" I myself am leery of any auction with this and feel its just a way to hide shill bidders. Other auctions I have seen with this were obvious rip-off counterfiets. Do you guys agree? Why else would this be on an auction? Whats a legit reason for a seller to have this on their auction?

  • No Paypal either. Avoid like plague.
  • You guys notice he's selling the card again? Wonder if his private "bidder" backed out?

I have learned a lot about the eBay culture since first joining it back in 1996. The PRIVATE BIDDER listing for an auction is one of those things that I avoid because I have found that it more than likely will COST ME one way or another.
There will always be another auction for the same item.

  • I agree. If you can't be open and up front in your auctions, count me out of ever bidding on your items.

The people that do it will come up with very plausible reasons.

Personally, if you have nothing to hide, why not keep it open and public?

  • There is absolutely no reason to run a private auction. Mostly hides shill bidding. I never bid on auctions where the bidders ID's are private. I've emailed sellers who run private auctions and asked why they do. Most don't respond. Some have said: "To protect my buyers." What?!? Another guy told me that it's to protect bidders from fake second chance offers. Absolutle drivel, clap-trap, tommyrot. While I did get a fake second chance offer once, it was as identifiable as other spoof e-bay emails.

The only true valid reason for running a Pvt. Auction IMO is when you truly do not want lurkers to know who is bidding on an item.

Example.......Some sell truly rare and expensive items and those that bid on them do not want others to know that they just bid 23k on a card and were the underbidder or winner for that matter.

So in that sense it is to protect the bidders.

Now as a general rule of thumb for general run of the mill items I see no valid reason to conduct Pvt Auctions.

I will not bid on auctions where the bidder is kept private for a number of reasons, mainly it's generally a scam, but it makes it simple for the seller to shill the heck out of the auction.

There are very few items where keeping the bidder private has its purpose, such as items someone might be embarrassed to purchase in a store, or items that someone might not want anyone else seeing in their feedback (porn magazines, sexual related items, etc.).

But for a sports card or memorabilia, it has absolutely no purpose and really shouldn't be allowed. eBay is not an anonymous marketplace, and if someone wishes to remain totally anonymous when purchasing a sports card, eBay isn't the place to buy them.
