A high grade example of this rare Lincoln cent proof coin is up for auction at the Long Beach Heritage auction on Thursday afternoon, February 9th.
1909VDB PCGS PR66RB
In today's market, price guides don't mean too much when special coins come up in auctions and certain collectors want the coin for their collection or for their registry. This is the case here, I believe. So far, with 11 days to go until the auction, 11 people have bid on the coin and 18 are tracking it. With the juice, it is currently at $19,550 and this is BEFORE any reserve is posted on February 2nd.
The CU price guide currently lists this coin at $15,000 in PR66RB.
True, this coin isn't for the average Lincoln collector, but the truth is almost NONE of this variety of 1909 Matte Proof Lincolns is even available to purchase IN ANY GRADE OR PRICE RANGE.
There were only 420 of this coin issued and probably less than 200 currently exist. Of the 93 that PCGS has certified and the 45 that NGC has certified in the past two decades, some have probably been crackouts. There are only 3 that are in a higher grade than PR66 so this is certainly one of the finest out there.
Let's see where it finally sells at.

How much would a 1909 VDB matte Proof 66 red bring ?
How about a 1909 VDB matte Proof 67 red bring ?
There is also the 1909 VDB NGC Proof 68 Red/Brown which is the prettiest matte Proof Lincoln of any date.Pedigreed to the John Story Jenks collection.

I think a 66 red would break $50k right now in the market.

My guess is that it is pretty close to being maxed out at 20K. (Unless Jack Lee is doing proofs as well!!!)
I have to admit, it's a cool coin.

Stewart,
My enjoyment with the 1909VDB Matte Proof and the 1990 no S Proof Lincoln cents comes from the fact that I consider myself to be just an average Lincoln cent collector and I feel privileged to own both of these very rare Lincoln proof coins.
I think the major Lincoln cent players who collect Lincoln proof cents will determine how much these very rare cents are worth. I know you are in a much better position to predict this market so why not venture your educated guess on this coin.

Is that what photoshop does to a Matte Proof Lincoln?

P.S. On second thought, those pictures look like they are business strikes. Am I wrong?

YES. At least two of the 13 bidders still want this coin. We are at $25.3K with the next bump to $27.6K. Who knows what will happen on the auction floor next Thursday. Good luck to everyone looking to get this rarity for their Lincoln cent proof collection. IMHO, it will always continue to rise in value over time.

it looks like it's on the coin due to it's color.
