The current bid for a 7 is about what you'd pay for an 8.

Yes, this looks like a nice 7 and could even possibly be bumped to an 8. But why the heck is the buyer bidding a price for what an 8 would bring, especially this early in the auction? It doesn't appear it has been shilled. Plain ignorance maybe?

  • It is a great looking 7. That buyer must have money to burn. I cannot imagine there will be too many bidders involved during the rest of the auction.

On a side note, that is a great scan the seller has of the card. I wish I could get my scanner to make my cards look that clear.

The current high bidder has been placing very aggressive bids for the last few months. I suspect it is someone that recently decided to build a collection.
Overall, I've been pretty stunned by many prices lately, especially on pre War and slightly less mainstream issues. I got a solid 8 for just a bit more a year or so ago. It takes two to get it this high, wonder where it will end.

Did anyone look at the bidding history? it appears that this guy wants the card and has 11 bids on top of his high bid.

I can see bidding it up maybe 1 more time but 11?

Also the seller even says "the card is a steal at anything below what an 8 would bring" hehe

    Good for you.

Not very familiar with the set, but I know that Musial is tough. So is Ashburn. I think both are SP's, and the few Musials I have seen were mostly of the 6 variety and not as centered as that one:

All of the Red Series are tougher, because Red Heart was still sending out full Blue and Green sets to anyone that asked as late as the mid 70's. I don't think any are especially tough in PSA 7, but I had a real hard time finding an 8 of Snider- the centering is usually pretty bad. He's in the green series. At the time (about 2 years ago) Snider 8's were going for more than Musial 8's.
Lemon (red series) was only slightly easier than Snider, and thougher than the rest.

Here's a little trivia- Red Heart Dog Food was the same company as Morrell Meats, the ones that did the Dodger sets from '59-61. Hopefully they didn't use the same meat for the dog food as the hot dogs, but I'm betting they probably did!

I was thinking of getting into this set at PSA 7. It seemed like the cards were available and the price for the Mantle wasn't outrageous. Now maybe I will reconsider.

Two bid retractions later and we are back to $400. As a seller sometimes I wonder if it might be best to lock in the current high bid and end the auction with a reliable bidder.
  • divecchiadivecchia Posts: 6,525 ✭✭✭✭✭
The two that retracted their bids do that a lot. One has 81 retractions in the last 6 months and the other has 31. I've never retracted at all. Of course there's no time when you snipe.

Both retractions say they bid the wrong amount. Sounds like a few months ago when 2 people were bidding on everything than retracting bids. From what I remember the sellers had no idea it was jsut 2 clowns playing.
