Countries of the World list

I received a coin from a giveaway the other day from the State of Eritrea. I've never heard of that country so I had to do some Googling. I thought I might try my hand at gathering at least one coin from as many countries as I can so I was wondering if anyone has a list of countries (past and present) that have issued coins. If possible an Excel spreadsheet would be great.
Thanks,

Try searching the archives. As I recall, a while back someone posted a list of the 100s of countries with coins shown in the 20th/21st Century Krause. How many there are really depends on how far back you want to go. German States, Italian States, and permutations of the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian Empires alone add more 100s of countries in the 18th and 19th Centuries, and there are even more additional countries on the ever changing maps of Europe, Asia, and the Americas listed in the 17th Century.
And all of that is in the Krause catalogs, which don't deal with ancients or the dark ages!
A One From Every Country collector has two major questions to decide in setting the parameters of the collection. First, what time period is to be covered; and second, should the collection be limited to one per country name, or expanded to include each government and/or monetary regime that issued coins in the country's history. The array of choices is dazzling:
Should England separately include pre-Commonwealth monarchies, the Commonwealth, post Commonwealth sterling and decimalization; or just some of those?
Krause separately treats each monetary system reform - should the collection do so too?
Krause separately treats every basic government overhaul - empire, kingdom, republic, restored kingdom, etc. - follow or ignore?
Believe me, I've only scratched the surface of the choices facing an OFEC collector.Millertime, I've recently started my own one-from-each-country collection and am using Krause as a guide. My criteria is:
1. The "anchor" denomination of that country (i.e. Mark for Germany, Franc for France, Peso for Mexico, etc)
2. Silver (where possible)
3. Pre-1950
4. Gem Bu condition
Good luck and have fun! Pls share your latest acquisitions as you go
Right now the only World Coin Catalog I have is from 1970 or so. I haven't been willing to shell out the money for a new one yet as I'm only interested in listing the coin and country it's from, eventually once my Darkside collection get somewhat organized I will want to have a current Krause. Of course if someone has a 2000 or later Krause they would consider letting go for cheap I might be interested.

<< <i>I was planning on building a list in Excel (easier to print and carry around) of as many countries (past and present) that I can find on a map. Any denomination or year for that particular country would fill the space for the country regardless of government and/or monetary regime. If a country changes it's name then I would like to have a coin for each name change.

Start by printing out this list. This list was originally compiled a couple years ago by a member from this board (Mongoose), who I haven't seen in quite a while. At his request, I put it on my site to keep it available for anyone who is interested in it.
I'm afraid to be alive without being aware of it
<< <i>There are OFEC collectors here. I would suggest you get a Krause catalog as a Start. >>
In case you weren't up on the lingo, OFEC= "One From Each Country", though you may have deduced that from the other posts.
I think you should stick with one particular time period, say the present day or your birthyear, or whatever. Chasing down one from each country throughout history could take several lifetimes, considering how the maps have changed and continue to change.
Start out with OFEC for the present day, perhaps, then if you want to do past governments, go for it. A friend of mine started doing OFEC by swapping with foreigners, since he works for US Customs, but pretty soon his German collection had grown to include a number of Nazi, Weimar Republic, and Imperial pieces as well, for example.

It took me a minute but I figure out what OFEC stands for. Using the list that kuhli provided gives me 376 slots to fill. It's definately a set that's going to take a while and will be added to as I casually acquire Darkside material. At least I have a starting point to somewhat catalog my misc coins.
Thanks everyone.
