1952 Topps Red Backs vs. Black Backs

Whys does the SMR price guide indicate that the red backs sell for a premium when the population report shows that graded redbacks are much more numerous??

Your assumption is incorrect. The Population Report segregates out the Black Backs. However, the other cards listed in the Population Report are not necessarily red backs. PSA only recently [last year or two] agreed to identify on the PSA flip the back color of the 1952 Topps cards that have both red and black backs. Thus - all the 1952 Topps cards graded prior to 2004 that have not been re-submitted can be either red or black backs.

I think it was last January (05) when they started designating the backs.
