1979 Topps Baseball Vending Box Break - Many Scans

As I mentioned in my prior thread about the 1978-79 basketball vending box break, I just opened 2 1979 Topps baseball vending boxes. I have gone through approximately 1/3 of the 2 boxes. The following are scans of some of the cards that I have pulled. I will add some more scans as I complete my search through the 2 boxes. The cards that I scaned all have razor sharp corners under 10x maginification and no chips on the borders. This is very unusual for vending. The only problem some of the cards had were minor centering issues and some tilts. I hope you enjoy.

As 79s go, not bad at all. I wish the Oz was as nicely centered as the Murcer!

    And you got 4 Thurmans!

I like the Rice, Dent and Blue AS card.

    thanx for sharing

I really love these box bust and pack bust threads. I have to admit, I really want to do one, maybe to help me in my 1978 set.

Thanks for the scans. The cards look great.

Thanks for the posts, I know it is work to do the scans.

  • Dave, did you get any Stargells? If so, could you scan your best one?

    Thanks

That Murcer and the 2nd McCovey have solid shots at 10s from quickly viewing them! Good luck if you submit these! image

  • Thanks. I have been very suprised about the quality of the cards from the vending boxes. I am getting some of the usual miscuts. However, the number of quality cards is stunning. Those scans were from 1/3 of the vending boxes. I just finished going through the rest of the cards. I ended up getting 4 Ozzies. However, they are all off centered. In addition to the cards listed above, I added another 100 cards that have a great chance to get a 9 and some are 10 candidates. I am going to submit them to PSA this week. I will let everybody know the results when they come in. As far as whether any cards will be for sale, it depends on the card. My doubles are definetly for sale and/or trade. However, the non-doubles (for submission to PSA) depends on the card. I am working on a high grade raw set. If I have a nice raw example of the card, then I would sell/trade the graded card.

If anybody is working on the set and needs any raw cards, please let me know. I have a few extra. image

As an aside, not all vending goes this well. I also opened 1980, 1981 and 1983 and the cards were not good.

    What's with the Oz cards?

So many come out that way! Must have to do the position on the sheet and cutting?

But still, to get 4 in 2 boxes? That's off the chart!

    Congrats on the cards!

Some very nice cards, sorry to see that you did not get the rare and valuable Red Lynn card.

  • Nice cards ... Any Willie Upshaw rookies?

  • thesplendidsplinter - I got several Stargell cards. I will scan and post the best one tonight.

Writer11 - I will look tonight for a nice Upshaw card. Do you have the card number?

Stingray - I was disappointed about not pulling the Red Lynn card. I saw yours and hoped I could be so lucky. Maybe nex time.

Mike - The Ozzie Smith card is so tough to find centered. I opened a lot of wax and rack from 1979 and have yet to find a great looking card. These vending boxes were so nice that I thought I had a great chance. However, the Ozzies were off centered and sandwiched between nicely centered cards. It has to be the location on the sheet that causes them to be so badly centered.

  • David,

Thanks. The Upshaw card is Card #341.

    Thanks

I thought the same thing with respect to cutting of a card - has anyone read anything about the position of a card and the likelihood of centering?

On this sheet, the Smith is on the border of the sheet.

  • I am going to look at the cards surrounding Smith on that sheet this weekend to see if they are consistent with Smith's borders. For example, Craig Swan (directly above Smith) should have almost no bottom border.

Do tell, this is great stuff. Brings back fond memories of my 78 Topps busts.

I'd be interested in those all-time leader cards if they come back as PSA 8's...
