It has been my experience PSA has been consistent in utilizing very strict grading standards for these hand-cut cards making it difficult to find high-grade examples of these cards. Auctions recently ended on ebay appear to reflect that finding these cards in high grade isn't going to be as easy ( or as economical) as originally perceived.

Wow, those prices are through the roof.

I have to admit I can't get my head around the grading standards on these cards. Someday I'd like to do a PSA Post set, but it seems unthinkable.

I think the best way is to buy the cards raw that have room to be recut and then just recut them. They are hand cut to begin with so I can't possibly see how recutting them would be wrong.

I paid $380 for the only PSA 8 Jim Brown in existance. I have done what you are suggestion Zef, but the entire black border must be there to receive anything above a 5. I have another brown that is in similar shape (no creases) that came back a 5. The only difference is that it is missing a small part of the black border on the bottom. I did get an 8 on a Sam Huff I sent in. There are a lot of these cards out there, but very few have intact borders.

If you look at the vast majority of raw Post football being offered on Ebay you will see that borders have been cut into. Even now on Ebay there is part of a Post cereal box with the cards on it but if you look you will see someone cut within the borders on all the cards. Link

Without a doubt, these cards are rare in high grade (7,8,9). It is quite an accomplishment for one of these cards to even get graded - even if it is a PSA 3 or 4. I must say that I see why PSA holds to the standards they do for these hand-cut cards because take a look at some of the poor examples offered up for sale on Ebay that wouldn't even qualify for a grade. Many Ebay sellers do not seem to understand that yet, which can be good for collectors like seinbigd because they can find occasional bargains for raw cards. However, I think the cat is out of the bag for collector awareness, especially after this thread.

To give you some idea how tough these are, here's my latest invoice which I submitted under the December Grading Special. Some of the lower grades were expected as I wanted to plug a few holes towards having a graded set. Still, I consider it is an accomplishment for all cards on this invoice to have received a grade.
