The European wave of industrial exhibitions in the 1800s also washed over Copenhagen. Markets for new industrial and agricultural products were to be encouraged and Copenhagen displayed as a modern capital city. The national and Nordic exhibitions were arranged by private businessmen, but still achieved an official status. The Nordic exhibitions in Copenhagen in 1872 and 1888 put their stamp on the city and also entailed an exchange of knowledge and culture with Europe outside of Scandinavia.

The website goes on in greater detail.
