What % of your net annaul income is spent on trading cards

Since everyone has a different net income, I wondered how much everyone spent on it. I was spending 15% for a couple of years, and decied that was too much. I am now down to about 5-10% of my net.

This is kinda personal question, but I wanted to get a feel for how much others are spending. I always wonder if it's a hobby or an addiction! lol
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!

I totalled up my purchases as best I could the other day... I couldn't believe how much money I had tied up into cards during the past year. Percentage wise, it was about 16% of my gross income.

I actually had a good year @ the track last year and some of the winnings went towards grading fees to PSA. So last year none came out of my personal income.

I spent too much last year - not really sure about the % - but to be honest probably in the 15% range.

After my bills are paid, I'm establishing a budget that is fair and realistic - hiding my buying from my wife is not fair to her.

That's why I had the thread on my 9.5 Step program - I think a lot of people overspend - it doesn't hurt to talk about it.

As I had said before, ebay will always have bargains, will always have that certain card and will always have too much!

So, I don't want to go broke saving money!

  • It is really easy to spend a lot of money on cards, especially on ebay or online. Buying with credit cards always makes it seem to cost less. I have been trying to buy all cards with cash in person, it makes you really miss the money.

Who knows exact figures. I can tell you this - I do buy and flip some cards [even if it is just raw submissions that I grade and sell for a profit]. I know for certain that I reinvest all of those monies, and then some, into the hobby.

I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

  • Can't argue with the Harvard man about investing back into the hobby.

  • As much as possible without getting a divorce. I learned along time ago to always buy as High a PSA grade as possible because when the wife see's you bought a card your getting in trouble anyway so might as well be for a good one. Kind of like when the TV salesmen said if your going to get in trouble for buying a 53" big screen might as well do the 60" instead crap is crap. lol image

    Just a little under 100%.
  • 5-10% of my annual net income, which does not include anything I flip over or just have to move. It used to be a lot more before I got married but we worked out an arrangement to have a fixed amount get direct deposited in a checking account for me to use exclusively for hobbies, beer, hobbies, more beer, more hobbies, etc.

Haven't kept track. I made a couple of big purchases recently, but usually ~5-10%.

TOOOOO MUCH!!!!!!!! ENJOY IT WHILE I AM HERE,SURE CANT TAKE IT WITH ME.

  • whatever the % is, just double it for a better figure.
my wife will spend the same dollar amount on stuff for herself.
hence an $1100 card will set me back $2200.
at this rate my collection of 58 bb should cost me only 5-10x smr for every card i still need.
expensive, but still cheaper than a divorce settlement.
what a stupid hobby. almost as costly as having race horses or an old boat !!

I don't keep track that way, but I agree with mikeschmidt - most of what I buy, and then sell at a profit, goes right back into my collection.
