March 2006 SMR - 1984 Donruss Article

This article has me feeling nostalgic about that great '84 Donruss Mattingly rookie and that pesky Joe Carter rookie. Is that 1984 Donruss Goose Gossage card a thing of beauty or what? That's a great shot. It looks like the catcher took the picture.

  • Is this one in the mail yet? I don't believe I have my copy. The last issue I have is the one with a big article about the Pete Rose collector.
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!

I got the March SMR two days ago. Man, nice article about 1984 Donruss set and it sure brings back
some great memories. I only picked up a few packs as I was a loyal topps guy back then.

I think the March issue of SMR should be in the mail. It has a great shot of Donnie Baseball on the cover.

Is that Carter rookie really that hard to find in high grade? I happen to have a raw '84D set that I bought really cheap just for enjoyment purposes. Most of the cards would probably grade between 7 and 8, with the possibility of a few 9's for a common or two. As I implied, it's definitely not investor grade, but as weird as it turned out, the Joe Carter rookie is absolutely pristine. Didn't give it much thought since Joe wasn't a HOF'er.

I can remember before grading was in style, the talk of the Carter being a problem for centering.

A PSA 10 Joe Carter 1984 Donruss rookie will likely net you anywhere from $250 to $450 on eBay. The Mattingly is actually a tougher card to find in PSA 9 or better.
