85t football wax bust...grades realized

received box today from bbce.

1st pack..biggest names were bartkowski and too tall jones.

2 cards damaged due to gum stains.

all cards warped to some degree, some more than others. i've never submitted a warped card with sharp corners. i'm assuming this would be some type of surface flaw and deducted accordingly. most cards have 3 sharp corners with wear on the other one. it's amazing how sharp 3 corners can be and then you hit the last corner with a flaw...arghhhhhh. even though there is some warp, these cards scream with gloss and dark black (unlike the last box purchased...which were faded).

heres the payton and elway. probably 7s maybe an 8 if i'm lucky.

Thanks,

David (LD_Ferg)

What do you mean by warped? Is it that they are "curved" in that there is space between the card and the surface when placed on something flat? I have submitted a couple of cards with this as an issue and I wasn't dinged for it.

Nope. No deduction for a natural curl. Actually makes them "mintier" ...

I had the same problem with the 1985T fb box I got from BBCE. I put the majority of the cards in an 800 ct box, shoved some filler in, and let the cards flatten themselves out. For the cards that looked "gradable", I put them in Card Saver 1s, stacked them up, and put a bunch of weight on top of them. That took care of the curve. :-) I got that idea from Fabfrank.

I saw some of the same corner issues in my box, but overall, I'd say I got a pretty nice box. Most of the stars were in "gradable" condition, and almost everything was centered nicely (60/40 at worst on a few cards).

sorry for the delay guys. it was suppertime with the family.

pack 2 (left side front column) yielded an elway....corner wear on 3 of the corners... image

had a very nice roger craig, deep black, nicely centered, strong corners...however, under a light has a bubble in the surface.

cards are much better in pack 2 as far as the warping, not near as bad. 2 cards still damaged due to gum stains.

i'll try to stay on top of it this time and open a few more and scan a few as well.

pack 3 (2 damaged with gum) all cards had some type of chip on the top edge. it looks like a roller mark or packing mark. no stars and a gastineau sticker.

pack 4 (2 damaged..i guess this will be a given throughout the box so i will not mention it unless it's not). nice willie gault. a few of these also had the roller marks or packing marks. no warping in this pack. image

pack 5 - payton with corner wear, probably an 8. nice largent, probably a 9...if i had to guess. i don't see anything that would yield a 10, or maybe i'm being too critical. i'm going to play the 2nd half of ncaa 06 ps2 with my youngest son...be back in about 20 mins.

pack 6 - very nice lofton, probably a 9. several 9 candidates so far. btw, my son killed me in the 2nd half in ncaa 06. more cards damaged due to the packing mechanism used.

pack 7 - still in left front column working down. nicest pack yet as far as condition. this one was filled with bears (too bad not a payton or dent). a nice hampton and suhey.

pack 8 - fouts, marino RB and dickerson RB, and a nice klecko. fouts is probably an 8 and he was always one of my favorites. the guy could pass. most of this pack is lower condition due to the packing again.

pack 9 - lawrence taylor (probably an 8, pushing a 9). decent danny white and george rogers. most of this pack had obvious corner wear. oh yeah, i forgot to mention that the top card in each pack has been damaged due to wax. it's still fun opening the box...on to the front right column.

pack 10 - louis lipps and mike webster. imo, probably 9s. still 2 cards damaged starting out this column as well as 1 damaged due to wax. a few on this top back warped like the first pack in the first column opened.

I have run into the same quality issue on busting wax too.

It's a great set, but opening packs for gradeable cards is a pricy risk. Worse yet that you lose 1-3 cards/pack from gum rot, makes it more so.

pack 11 and 12 were nothing above an 8 as far as grading is concerned. some o/c cards and no stars.

pack 13 yielded a marino o/c top/bottom with minimal corner wear, probably an 8 o/c. also got a nice matt millen and richard dent. dent looks like an 8, if you want a scan, let me know. i hope this is not boring any of you. my kids think i'm nuts opening these packs and then telling you all about them...LOL. also got a couple of League Leader cards.

Ax- That is the same with all wax.

I have opened 3 85 vending and the corners just don't look good. I have an 85 Muchniak right now at PSA from vending so I will see how it fares.

I still think wax is your best bet on this issue. I think over time this will be a highly sought after year as there are so many HOFers and the cards are unique without going overboard. Also there is something about black bordered cards that many collectors like.

I am going bac to dig up some stashed away vending to see what I can find. I have yet to do a wax box but I think it will be my next purchase. I think it has been 3 monts since I bought unopened product so I am due for a treat.

Nice scans LD and that Danimal looks pretty sweet.

Meanwhile, for those that don't know what untampered vending should look like:

    image

See the pattern, that is how it ALL should look. Uniform. I went through this box already which is why at the top and bottom the pattern breaks. Also, it should bet packed full. These boxes barely hold 500 cards so if they are extracted, they will never get them back in ther to see the patern in the middle to be consistent throughout.

Sorry to hijack, but I was shocked when I opened this to still see the pattern amongst the middle cards.

decided to open a few packs this a.m. before work and heading on the road for the weekend (be back to post scans sunday and finish the box).

pack 15 yielded a moon (wax stain as it was the last card) and nice cards of the following: dorsett, lambert, lomax, tony franklin, and sam washington. also had a nice LT sticker.

packs 16-18, not much as far as names or gradeable cards. a decent payton record breaker (probably an 8) along with an ozzie newsome.

i'll finish the box sunday...and hopefully i'll get my vending order tomorrow while i'm out of town. image

    Thanks,

zef- That looks like an awesome vending box. Unfortunately many don't look that way. I'm becoming convinced wax is a waste. Just not enough gradeable cards to offset the cost of the box. That leaves racks as the only viable option. But that's way expensive too. Still, I would pay for the racks as even the borderline cards are better looking than cards from wax packs.

    I agree Frank.

Rack packs and grocery packs definitely offer better quality edges and centering than wax. However, they sometimes show more corner wear (due to packaging). The wax pack cards always seem to have that fiber type cut to them.

got home a day early. planning on finishing the 85 bust tonite. just opened pack 19, top right stack in the box. pulled some nice cards in this pack: alzado, marcus allen, darryl talley, and barry redden. if you want to see scans, let me know. moving on to pack 20. i'll continue to just edit this one post.

    pack 20...notta.

pack 21. pulled a nice mike lansford and mike merriweather. both look like 9s.

pack 22. nothing above an 8: haslett, gastineau, ray guy, marino sticker....these look beautiful until under the loup...

pack 23. nothing but several falcons, nothing above an 8 and a sweet dorsett sticker. this column does not seem to be in very good condition.

packs 24-27, not much other than a riggins, phil simms (o/c left right), and a dent (probably an 8).

    Thanks,

    ldferg,

Are you planning on submitting any of these cards?
  • Options
    ldfergldferg Posts: 6,739 ✭✭✭
    six,
yes, i am planning on submitting tomorrow. i've pulled about 100 that have a legit shot at a 9. i know the payton and elway and some of the stars i'm sending will be 8s at most, but i'm wanting them slabbed regardless.

i have about 15-20 rack packs still unopened and i'm debating whether or not to bust them and add to the submission.

    Thanks,

    David (LD_Ferg)

ldferg- A bit of advice. Take another look with fresh eyes (after a few days rest) at the cards before submitting. When I do this I always find cards that are borderline. Cards that I hope would grade 9 rather than will. I put them in their Cardsavers and put them aside. This method saves me grading fees, but it also helps me keep track of possible future grading candidates. Key word is "Possible"image

    ff,
thanks for the advice. i will do just that. i'm actually sorting out the non-candidates now just putting them in order. i'll go back over the ones i've pulled tonite and again tomorrow before filling the submission form.

    thanks again

frank...should have taken your advice more thoroughly on the fresh eyes. for the most part, the grades are what i expected with a few worse. sent several just to be slabbed (ie dent, payton, moon...) even if they weren't mint.

I got hit on my latest sub too. No 10's few 9's and too many 8's. Ironically that submission was from some rack packs I had and I felt were better than the cards i sent from wax in a previous submission. I'll wait till they arrive and see if there are any worthy of re-submitting. In the meantime I'm interested in some of your cards:
    1985 TOPPS 13 STEVE BARTKOWSKI N/A 9
    1985 TOPPS 29 WILLIE GAULT N/A 9
    1985 TOPPS 65 BOBBY WATKINS N/A 10
    1985 TOPPS 359 MARK MALONE N/A 9

PM or email me if you are interested in selling and your price.
