Questions on grading of black border sets

Most of my submissions have been vintage cards. The few modern that I have sent in have not been any of the black border sets. Some of the disussions on these boards have peaked my interest in perhaps starting some modern sets. I thought that some of the black border sets might be an interesting challenge.

I have a good supply of a some of the black border sets and thought I might try submitting some. If I can get a good part of the set in grades 9 and 10 through my own submissions rather than mostly 8's and some 9's, I might give it a shot rather than having to buy the cards.

I have checked over a few hundred cards and I have some questions. How much chipping is allowed for a grade of 9? Is any chipping at all allowed for a grade of 10? I have a lot of cards that do not have any wear at the corners, but might have a tiny chip near or at the corner. If it were a white border card, you would not know it is there, but on a black border card it can be seen (sometimes you need to look with a loop).

I am looking for expertise from some of you that have submitted some black border cards. I would like to enclose a few scans that show the top part of a card and would appreciate any comments. The Padres card has some light chipping along the top. The Mariners card is very nice, but under 10X or 20X loop you can see a tiny chip at the upper left corner. The Phillies card has a little more chipping than the other two.

I have a 1985 Topps Football card with similar "chipping" as in your Padres card. It's in a PSA 9 holder. Your Padre's card looks like it has a touched upper-right corner though. Try doing the scan with a darker background, it's hard to determine where the card ends and it's shadow begins. Also, zoom in just a little more.

  • Here is another picture with a different background. You have sharp eyes, there is a small chip in the upper right corner.

  • Watch for centering, as well. IMO, the Mariners card is the only one solidly centered. GOOD LUCK!
