Looks good, yes. But I've seen better Licinius (don't remember exact type) for around the same price. (Hair detail, etc) Beast Coins is a great seller though.

Nice coin. The large number of pieces from Balkan hoards have made nice pieces like this available at fairly low prices. This series is very interesting in that the arrangement of mint and field markings in RIC lets you estimate the date within fairly tight ranges (usually).

  • It always amazes me how coins of that age can remain so beautiful after centuries.

These hoards are often in the thousands or even tens of thousands of coins and often went into the ground almost immediately being struck. I recall a US dealer telling me he had had the chance to pick out the "best" 8,000 of a group many many times larger. If you think about it, the coins on the outside of the group would be "crusty" but as you move into it, the coins had no exposure to the elements and would look almost like they came out of the mint. Also, with a population of ~100 million, the roman mints churned out tons and tons of coins......

Amazing how many coins they minted and of course no one ever threw them away. Many a soldier on the eve of battle or peasant about to be overrun would bury his coins and if killed, well, there they remained until LordM came by to find them with his detector.image

Yeah, I love the fact that I can get these great looking coins for $40. About once a month I go looking through ancients with nothing particular in mind. Just a $50 limit on my spending. It's always a fun trip and I usually wind up with something nice. I don't think it gets much better than that.
