People that dont collect cards... Babe auto photo added

never cease to amaze me. They average person that does not collect cards thinks that every card is worth a fortune. We recently went to Tennessee to stay in Gatlinburg. The Smokey Mts. are so beatiful. Anyway I went to all the local antique stores in search of any memorabilia. First thing I saw was a copy of a Babe Ruth photo that couldnt have been more then 10 years old and it was autographed by the Babe himself. We had a laugh at that one and I kept on looking. Next I found a 1971 Topps Nolan Ryan card in a one screw for $125.00. The sad thing was it would probably grade a 4. Next to that was a 1992 Topps Mark Mcgwire in a toploader (no penny sleeve) with a bargin price of $25.00. Next to that was a 1988 Topps wax pack for a great buy at just $20.00. Its funny how people see baseball cards as a ticket to easy street. Heres some pics of the trip:

Have been to Kentucky, but not Tennesee, but it looks nice. We are big campers and that looks like a great place to go.

I live in Western KY, but have been to Gatlinburg 3 or 4 times (including our honeymoon). I believe I have been to the same shop. Was it in Pigeon Forge. Was it in a strip mall with all of the buildings having a red roof or at least near there? I believe it was across the side street from "Lil' Dolly's" (that a little girls fancy dress shop). We have a 2 year old daughter and have bought a couple of little dresses in there. While my wife was in there, me and my five year old son walked across the street and saw the shop. I didn't buying anything. Everything was priced way to high.

Way off point but anybody that's been to Gatlinburg will laugh. I grew up in the middle of Los Angeles and went to a school in central LA. Very diverse upbringing. In 1985, middle of 11th grade, my mom got re-married and her husband had the great idea of opening a laser show in Gatlinburg, TN. We picked up and moved to G'burg. That 8 months living there was a SHOCK. Going to a school in LA where I (white guy) was the minority and then changing to a school that was 100% white (and had a real hatred for others) was just a shock. Not to mention them never having heard of all the "cool" things I had like Swatch watches, Guess jeans, etc.... An interesting chapter in my life. Back then they had several card shops in G'burg and Piegon Forge (aka: Piegon Droppings, as we called it back then) but I was more concerned with cars, girls, etc... so didn't buy any. The laser show bombed BAD but my mom still has that building and the tenant pays rent... as a tattoo parlor! Funny.
P.S. Oh ya, but I still like the Vol's! Just being there 8 months was enough to become a fan!

    Tennessee-
I have gone back several times and gone to many football games there. Compared to California sporting events it is 1,000 times more fun in Knoxville. Fans pack the stadium, care about the outcome, know what's going on, etc.... I love California but for sporting events SEC football is the best!

Hey, cool! They got one of those "granite ball over water spout" thingies over at Storyland, NH too. My 5 and 3 year old love with playing that.

OK, I like playing with it too image

Yep Larry I agree, Like Colin Cowherd says "Sec games smell like Bar-b_que, Bourbon and Chanel #5.

  • Matt, your daughters are adorable. Enjoy these years before they're gone. In the blink of an eye they'll have a phone glued to their ear and will be to cool to hang with the old man. My oldest is off to college this fall. Seems like yesterday they were young like yours.image

tennesseebanker, Thanks for the offer, but after driving 12 hours from Saint Petersburg ( FL ) my butt couldnt take anymore milesimage

frankhardy, I know the store you are talking about. I tried to go there, but the four times I stopped by the guy was never there.

Onlypsahockey, Thank You. Everyone says it goes by too fast, I am not looking foward to itimage

It is such a beautiful part of the country but it can be scarry if you are not use to driving up and down steep, icy-snowy, roads 4000-6000 feet high. Its amazing when you drive up there, there is just the occassional guide rail to keep you from going over. Most of the time there is just trees to maybe catch you. Going down was even more fun. On one trip down a person in a Nissan Pathfinder was coming up, when I pulled closer to him I saw that he was sliding slowly toward the very low rail on one of the iced over bridges. I of course stopped to let him try to get going but I was also afraid that someone else coming down might rear-end me and send us over. So I waited a couple minutes and said the heck with it and attempted to pass him and of course starting on ice you end up slipping so I had to engage the four wheel drive and we were fine.

  • sounds good, but I wouldn't want to put pics of kids on the internet anywhere. Too many crazy folks out there.

You got a steal of a deal!!!
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!
