How rare is a 1953 Lincoln Proof

DDO on the date which would be the FS1-021.7

I have one that will be going in to pCGS for attribution, based on CD's word that it would most likely grade at 66/67 RD, but the variety is what I'm looking for, and can't find any listed in the registry or anyones registry.

I'm actually hoping it goes 68RD, but then who am I to ask this of God and the Apostles to perform miracles.

Anyone care to assist with some info?

I've been fortunate to find 3 of these in raw proof sets, but I don't think they are particularly rare. Based on some data from Philly Joe, early '50's proof cent dies were able to strike 4-6000 pieces before they were retired. So if the DDO die ran for its normal life, the population could be as high as 6000 pieces. With a total mintage of 57,500 pieces, the DDO can probably be found in approximately one out of ten sets or so (give or take).

But if the die was damaged and retired early, the population could be far less.

I hope your example is indeed high grade, I have never seen one that has graded above a 67.

Not rare at all. Most have a touch of cameo as well. Never seen a fully cameo, but I'm cer5tain they exist.

Agree, Not to rare, but a neat DDO. Maybe Coppercoins can add some info.

I have a 1953 double die in my registry set. It's a 65CAM with watery fields, but also a bit of haze that makes it difficult to get a good photo. The doubling is obvious to the right of the "1" in the date, but not easy to see elsewhere. It's in a green label slab, and was purchased on Teletrade as a regular 1953 65CAM for $50 in Dec. 1993.

guess who told me it was a DDO!

mine won't cam- but she is definitely better than 67RD- which to me is well worth the cost of slabbing it.

I put the bad guy to the test this past week- 35x microscope- not a mark on it- the fileds are like walkin on water- I would bet I could shave with it- unfortunately- I'm not letting it anywhere near the sink or a razor.

this will be one of 19 to go in for grade- now I need to find the lincoln guru who has the pull at the Big House of DH!

    any takers?
