Mexican un Onza bullion (Libertads) Question?

Hi folks, I am heading to Manzanillo, Mexico Feb 3rd to watch the Super Bowl (on the 5th) in bare feet, Margarita in hand and possibly no shirt. I am going to remain there til the 11th to recuperate from the super bowl 'ritas'.....My question is can a person (like myself) purchase silver libertads from a local bank? Thanks in advance...........Rick

  • Yeah, probably...

But you better expect to pay tourista prices. They will spot your hung-over, bare-footed, shirtless self from 1.6 kilometers [a mile] away.

And don't assume they don't know the current spot price for bullion. They are more up-to-the-minute on that info than KITCO.Com...

Hi whohah, Thanks for the info and I already know what I want to pay.......Seeing My NY Giants aren't in it, I think it's going to be a tough game with maybe Pittsburgh edging it out 17-14 (which as of right now does not make the spread)................Rick

  • Coin Depot was advertising these a week or two ago for under ten bucks each.

It's probably cheaper to buy these bullion coins in the US.
I see them constantly at coin shows and at dealers.

  • In general, the Mexican banks don't carry the silver libertads, just like most US banks don't carry the silver eagles. Here's a list of Local Mexican Distributors. With silver spot (melt) pushing $9.50 per ounce, expect to pay at least $1.50 over ($11.00 per ounce) for even common date libertads. Some U.S. dealers run these on special from time to time such as Coast to Coast. They are currently sold out of libertads since they were selling them too cheap.

  • Rick, sorry for the delay in replying -- been busy. Coin Depot is a large-volume dealer on (I think) the East Coast of the USA. They have big two-page ads in _Coin World_ and _Numismatic News_ regularly. I think I saw this Libertad ad about two weeks ago.

  • Hi There. I just got back from Puerto Vallarta and my search for Libertads was next to impossible. I did find a money exchange selling the 1oz
for 120 pesos. Ive been calling the Mint down there and its been difficult with no english speaking workers, but I did get prices on rolls in all sizes and proof issues which I think are a great buy ith such low mintages. I dont know what I did with the list and lost the link but google Mexico Mint and they may help you if you know spanish. Manzanillo is supposed to be beautiful so enjoy your trip and let us know how you did hen you get back. I was lucky enough to buy a 5lb box of mexican coins at an antique store for 25.00 us. Mostly dates from 50s/60s but have not had time to go thru them all yet. Im sure good deals abound somewhere there. Good Luck.
